Hi All,

I've been asked to pull together a quote on a small semi-portable machine to be mostly used in music production. He really likes the idea of the handles on the Bitfenix prodidgy.

It's mostly CPU work, and he would like a large SSD and loads of RAM. He'll need an OS as well

The budget is £900

Thanks for any advice !

If he needs portability why doesn't he get a laptop?

A budget of £900 probably won't get him the spec he needs.

OP large to some is not large to others ;) What capacity SSD were you thinking? Will he want HDD storage also?

If it's for music production are there specific I/Os he needs? Or the ability to drive a certain pair of cans?

A bitfenix prodigy is still too inconvenient if you really need portability (I know because I made that mistake with my work PC).

As long as there arent any needs for a discrete pcie sound card for example I would get something like a HP 800 g2 mini - they are basically the smallest pc you can get, that still come in decent specs e.g. i7 in some models.

Nearly small enough to fit in a coat pocket, and weigh nothing.

Well I am givng thought to replacing my Micro ATC system with an ITX system as we want a small desk in our home office. The Silverstone Raven RVZ02 looks promising as for me it can accommodate a video card as well without taking up to much room (looking at the dimensions is looks a tad bigger then as a XBONE).

If you want something smaller there's a the Silverstone Milo ML05B, it has plenty of storage options (4x 2.5 drives and 1x 3.5 drive if you replace the optical bay).

In terms of hardware wait for Ryzen to show up in the next couple of weeks and check out the reviews there should AM4 ITX boards available at launch so you might be able to save some money by going the AMD route which given current ram prices is welcome relieve.

I would have thought something like this laptop would be ideal and a lot of music types use laptops over desktops however small and not necessarily need a SSD with audio in mind.

Portability only needs to be luggable as he's not on the road so much. Laptops are not upgradeable and have had issues with noisy coolers in the past.

I'm awaiting details of the specific connectors he needs, but I was assuming those would be handled by a quality sound card.

Yes I'm waiting for Ryzen, and am mostly looking for a current spec I can compare Ryzen to. So recommendations on case, psu, mobo and probably a 512gb Ssd with a HDD fir raw storage

Ok - I've been waiting for the Ryzen reviews and I'd like to put something together around the Coolermaster HAF XB Evo, and an R1700.
What would you suggest ?
