That isn't rubbish- I don't want a 6450. I'm hoping for 5850/4890/GTX460 territory performance if that is possible?

I'd be buying second hand so from the last few generations is fine.

I just cut the bracket on one of my 7970's to make it single slot.

ED: That was with a waterblock though...

Not sure what I/O configs the cards you mentioned use, but the above solution is always an option should the bottom row be clear of sockets :)

second edit!!

it appears the single slot hd7850 was only available in limited quantities outside asia.

there is also this low profile, single slot hd7770 variant which is being released:

Those two are probably going to be a bit much, maybe i'll tone down the performance expectations.

What about older cards that are single slot? All I can find from the Nvidia side is the GTS240 (do not want) and AMD 4670s. Are there any others?

erm i have a 4650 sat next to me, passive, its two slot but the second slot would be above not below the card. dont know if thats of used to you?

To dig this up again, I've come across a few options

£10 X1650
£20 4670
£30 9600GSO

is the 9600 GSO going to be noticably better than the other two?

Have a look for the single slot HD5670 GDDR5 and HD6670 GDDR5.

BTW,is this for the Shuttle project -before I cut out aprt of the case,I used the HD5670 GDDR5 -it did run a bit hot.

The 9600GSO and single slot 9800GT cards do consume more power and pump out more heat than the HD5670 GDDR5 though and are not bus powered too.

I'm not hugely bothered about the heat as we're talking £30 GPUS here; finding a solution to the heat problem is all part of the fun ;)

It is for the project yeah. I can get a 6670 GDDR3 for £40- I'm not sure it is worth the extra tenner?

Or maybe I'll get the £10 X1650 (or none at all as depending on what i3 I get, the IGPU may be better!) as a temporary video solution until Mr Right comes along.
