Hi.

It's been years since I last played an RTS.
Last one I properly got into was Mega Lo Mania on the Amiga!! LOL!

Anyways, maybe its about time to turn back to this genre after a short break.

I've just bought a shiny new 4850, so I'm looking for something with plenty of eye candy.

Not bothered whether its Sci-fi or historic. Just let me know which one is the best of recent day titles.

Cheers.

supreme commander is fun for a while in single player but online is terrible, game runs as slow as the slowest pc in the game and there's no strategy really its just everyone spam units til the games a choppy slow mess.
Sold my copy a while back as there was no real point keeping it as the online was so poor.
Company of heroes is the best game ever made so enough said really.

Just don't allow people with bad specs in, kick anyone having a slow single core cpu or even slow dual core cpu's, allow nothing less than 3ghz c2d or a quad with at least owt like an 1950 pro. Ask for specs at start and kick any **** with a slow pc ruining the game for you.

Spamming= awesome, thats why I play supcom, for the massive battles of 100's vs 100's, shame the limit per player is as low as 1000, I'd like 10,000 much more, ohwell good old days of Cossacks European wars, no unit limits there or at least, you never hit them the game was fine if you wanted a few groups or if you wanted thousands.

CoH is great too but just too small scale for me, I like massive battles... The movement in CoH is buggy sometimes too, for no reason units going at full speed ahead previously bounce back as if they hit something, infantry making use of your built sandbags could be improved too, they move out of cover too easily or refuse to get into cover in the first place. These things start annoying me when I play it. Obviously some of the powers are overpowered too, I had a nice impenetrable defense barrier, the ai dropped an artillery strike on me and boom, everything gone, if it were units: fair enough, but the ai had nothing as i killed pretty much all it's units. In supcom at least you can make shields and strategic missile defenses and stuff, you can build a nearly impenetrable defense properly, you just need time.

anyways, like quick tactical/strategic combat on a smallish scale: CoH is the best
Like massive battles with hundreds if not thousands: Supcom or Medieval 2: Total war.

I am in the middle of these two :)

I love medievil total war 2 even though it has many shortcomings (pray for these to be fixed in E:TW). Online is great fun. And arrows beat guns anyday of the week.

CoH is a blast though its a little unforgiving online, i've blown to nothing many times by very skilled players who know the game inside out. Amazing single player story.

You can get both games plus expansions for £40 maybe less. I know where i would spend my money

World in Conflict <- Best looking RTS by far and one of the better looking games in general
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
Dawn of War

All good games as well.

yes thats all well and good but people Lie about their specs don't they

Hmmm, we should submit a request to GPG for hosts to be able to see the system specs of the joiners, eg. so the host can see person X who says he has a Q6600 actually has a 3.2 ghz pentium 4 ..

CoH is without a doubt the best rts i have ever played, been playing it since the original beta and the game is still fresh with me learning something new ever time i play the game

You can have all dawn of war games for £30 on steam afaik, always heard they were good.

CoH has immense gameplay, very refreshing and challenging.

WiC is more like a fps in terms of online playability, gets troops and fight, no base building.

Never tried Supreme Commander out of beta, didn't appeal to me.

Supreme Commander is the best atm imo :) Get the demo and give it a go

I agree that supreme commander is about the best strategy game around... But with that said, if he hasn't played strategies for a while it might be better to go for something a little less complex, with a little less of a steep learning curve.

Another vote her for World in Conflict. Best strategy game I've ever played, no faffing around with base building or resource gathering, just control your troops. :)

Some of the best graphics I've ever seen in an RTS with the best nuclear explosions ever. Gotta be seen to be believed. :D

Another vote for Dawn of War. You should be able to pick up the original game for next to nothing (Winter assault is the only expansion worth having anyway, unless you're big into multiplayer).

Dawn of war would be an excellent game to start with.

...but as for the expansions I can't agree with you here! I thought that winter assault was terrible (way below the standard of the original), but that dark crusade was fantastic. I haven't tried soulstorm, but don't hear good things about it.

It's the fact that there's no storyline in dark crusade or soulstorm, just a load of skirmish missions. Great for multiplay cos of the extra races and units, but it just didn't grab me for singleplayer, especially since the story for the first campaign was so well written.

Warcraft III for me.

It's the only Strategy game I've got into. Mostly helped by my WOW experience. Cracking game. Possibly the best I've played for years. I'll probably keep playing this till the next WOW expansion. I've always wondered how online strategy games playout.
