Hi all

Having recently moved into my first house with garden, may parents have given me lots of old tools that used to belong to my Grandad, which is lovely, however there sadly was not a strimmer amongst the tools and I would rather like one for quickly going round edges etc.

I'm not after anything amazing that could be considered almost pro kit, I just want something that is light enough to make it nice and easy, cuts well and won't have me having to switch off and manually feed out more line when it breaks. I experienced this very thing with one some years back and it made it a complete pain to use!!!

Ideally I want electric as I don't want to be messing around with petrol engines and things, I just want it nice and simple, plug in and off I go, perfectly happy for it to be corded as I'd rather that than having to make sure it's charged or finding it runs out of power halfway round or anything.

Budget...well I'd like to spend as little as possible really.

Any advice or recommendations very much appreciated.

Valve: Just gone & had a look for you,a bit dirty with dried grass.:p

It a bump fed, just tap on a firm surface & line feeds out automatically.

Cool, does it work pretty well, I've seen some reviews saying that it's quite stiff and needs to be 'bumped' on a hard surface or it doesn't work?

How is it for trimming fairly short, again some reviews ahve said you haver to have it at quite an angle?

I have used the Bosch to cut down a few docks, & Nettles, when too idle to use my petrol Stihl brushcutter.
Haven't had any problems with line feed, than forgetting to tap regularly, then you need to remove the spool & feed the line through the holes.

Been using some 1.6mm 'Oregon Star line' has a five-sided shape, & Sawtec brush cutter line, which last longer than ordinary line.

I finally got myself a strimmer at the weekend, I went for the Bosch ART23 Easy Trim as recommended. Managed to pick it up for £20 as homebase had an offer on.

Gave a it a bit of a whirl over the weekend and have to say it is really good, took down the grass in my front garden with no worries, and managed to cut down some brambles that my mum's old qualcast handn't been able to touch! :)

Bump feed system seems to work well and the change in pitch when you need to feed more line is more obvious than previous strimmers I've used.

My only very minor complaint which is the same for most such items is that it is a little too short for comfortable extended use...and I'm only 5'8" so not tall!

Would definitely recommend it though!

Are there any electric ones which come with a blade or blade-like attachment for tackling heavy stuff like brambles?

These cheapy ones are probably designed with frail old women in mind as blokes go for the biggest petrol one they can find :p.

There is a Bosch telescopic model for £35, but guess its not really possible to swap yours now it's been used (unless you find a fault ;))

I'm on the lookout for a strimmer, but i'd prefer dual line feed and a bit more power. This looks to be quite good for the money:

I have a Bosh telescopic one ART 23 Combitrim, & I'm 5' 8", & at it's longest 1150mm it's still seems too short for me, & the midway handle is all wrong for me, too far up them stem, makes your arm ache after a while.

Would have suggested ART 23, but was way over budget.

Better off with petrol for the heavier stuff.

Only electric one i can think of, Ryobi

Looks absolutely perfect, however, also looks like its been discontinued :(

My dad has a petrol bush cutter I can borrow but was hoping an electrical version was available so I could use one in relative "silence". Thanks for looking tho.

edit: Maybe it hasn't been discontinued, just very hard to find in stock.

This model seems similar and is in stock at a few places I looked. It's a bit more expensive than the one on Screwfix, but the Screwfix price is probably wrong anyway. I have seen out of stock items on there before for a low price and waited for it to come back in stock and then the price changes .

Use code SEVEN50MAY for £7.50 off, plus 5% cashback with quidco or TCB

EDIT: Seems Screwfix might have read my post as it now appears to be in stock...
