Spec me a sub £150 phone

Stupid question : so just buy that one and unlock it or something and it will be the same as the SIM free version?

I plan to get her on giffgaff eventually, same as me, so O2 one to go for?

get the o2 one, and just ditch the sim or you can sell the sim on with the £10 top up on ebay or there's a wesbite out there that actually buys them to sell on.

you dont need to unlock the o2 version

If you're not too bothered about it being brand new, you should be able to pick up a used Nokia 920 or HTC One S (maybe even an X if you're lucky)

development community isn't huge but they are making progress slowly

if someone does make a decent custom ROM, you could easily hang onto the phone for a year before upgrading to the next budget king.

with the budget market it is important to buy and sell at the right time.

i managed to buy the wife a san fran, sell it on for more than i paid for it then buy a monte carlo and sell that on for more than i paid for it then get a g300 and sell that on for just under what i paid for it all within the space of say 2 years, she now has a nexus 4. reason why people paid so much was because they had been modded with alternative firmwares, kernels and ROM's and kept in mint condition.

so basically you sell the phone for pretty much what you paid for it in the first place = free phone to own or you then use that money towards your next budget phone with updated spec basically = free upgrades for life if you keep doing it.

How does one know the right time to sell on a phone?

as soon as the next budget king appears, get one on order and put your current phone up on ebay.

so basically your one of the first to sell it on.

you will need to be active on these forums as well as modaco for new budget phones appearing.

all the phones i purchased before for the wife were all £100 or cheaper. these phones don't tend to depreciate much if at all within a short space of time of say less than a year. so basically the next time a phone appears for £100 or less and has even a slightly better spec, sell your current phone and buy it.

it is also fun, constantly buying and selling phones, having a new toy to play with. in fact it's so enjoyable once you buy a high end phone and stop doing it, your looking to upgrade when you don't really need to and are going to lose out because high end phones cost a lot more so they do depreciate.

basically i would be looking to hold onto the y300 for 8 months maximum, theres always another "great" budget phone being released every 6-12 months or so.

ZTE, Huwaei and Orange re-brands as well as t-mobile re-brands are the ones to look out for usually.

like i say if you upgrade often and quickly enough, you don't lose any money and your basically getting free upgrades for life.

we both have nexus 4's now though, because they were the first "cheap" high end phones. waiting for the next nexus before upgrading and will need to ebay them as soon as we have the new nexus on order.

Got my Aunt the O2 one I think it was £69, its seriously a steal. Its really nice, the build is much better then the S3. Its a sort of soft touch textured plastic which feels nice, phone felt solid and everything was just really nice. The software is a bit iffy I just installed Apex/Nova and it was just fine.

Tempted for £59... will have to try and dig out an old O2 sim as the giff gaff one wouldn't validate for upgrade (no surprise there lol).

I would say though that this thread has gone off-topic a little, as it started out as best phone for £150 lol.

you will be hard pressed to find a better phone brand new for £150.

the reason why this is so cheap is because it isn't a brand name but a cheap chinese manufacturer.

the same phone made by samsung/htc/sony, etc would be double in price and the same phone made by apple would be triple in price.

Only thing of note is that it doesn't have a digital compass. That might be of a concern to some people.

Trying to dig out an old PAYG sim to see if I can get the discount lol.

Ok... so if do the 'upgrade' with CPW, and I do the check and give them the sim serial number etc.... what happens to that SIM card that had the check on it? Could I keep using it in another phone etc? (I.e. the network don't terminate it or something daft?)
