A friend needs a new ultra portable laptop.

They currently have an old Acer netbook and they like the size of it, however the screen is getting dodgy as it won't display at certain positions when open, plus the resolution is shocking.

Doesn't need a lot of power. Mainly used for checking emails, browsing the web and watching video of musical recordings while travelling and flying a lot (so not completely rubbish speakers would be nice, although I know that will be tough in a laptop this size)

My immediate thought is the current 12" Macbook, which is tiny and lovely. But bleedin' expensive, plus it's OSX.

They'd be happy to learn how to use it if I show them though.

Macbook
£1,250
20cm x 28cm
0.92kg

It seems there's quite a few other good little Win 10 laptops about though, some for about £500 (or more) less than the Macbook. Not sure where to start though.

What else can anyone recommend for the same ultra portableness?

Thanks :)

If you only use it for basic tasks why not get a well looked after Lenovo X230 or similar from Ebay. I've bought a few for friends and family. Try get one with and SSD and 8GB and it will fly. The last few I've bought have all been in the £200-£250 range and they're all pretty much as new.

Absolutely agree :)
Personally I'd go for the X220, processor is very marginally slower, but the keyboard is streets ahead.

Only thing to make sure of is that you get the IPS screen option if you're looking to watch videos, as the others aren't as great.

If it is light tasks the Toshiba Click 10 (not sure if there is a replacement model yet but still can find some new) is worth a look at unless they want a bigger screen. Lenovo and 1-2 others do similar.
