spec me a switch

Might sound a stuipid question, but its my first build and I aint to sure what i can use. Can i use any switch, i was hoping to use a purple push button if possible. Anyone know of any?

no such thing as stupid questions. but it would be handy to know what you want the switch to do. i'm going to assume you mean a power and a reset switch in which cas any switch thats classed as a "momentary" switch will do for both jobs. after that its a matter of personaltaste and budget with regards to what style you go for. The belkin/vandal switches are very good and look nice but there are many more out there

this is the type i wanted, but the led is the wrong colour, would i be able to change the led over to a purple one??

Also do i need to put an led in for the HD? and do i need to atatch the speaker or can i just remove it??
Any idea how to stick perspex to alu? i'd rather not have any fixing visable

Whether or not you'd be able to switch the LED depends on how the switch is in it's off state. If the ring of light is coloured red and lit by a white LED then you can't do much with it. If the ring of light is clear and is lit by a red LED then it can be changed.

Here's a post I made showing the mod of a switch from White to Orange. Of course these switches are not suitable for power buttons but shows how it can be done.

Those vandal switches are quite expensive but give a nice look to a switch. There are other, cheaper sites to get them from and I found one in White which I would get to mod to purple. Lamptron do make a purple one but I've had no luck sourcing one in the UK, although it wasn't too hard to find one available to our American friends. This is not to say they aren't available, I just didn't spend too much time looking.

Changing the LED for a HD illumination shouldn't be too tricky, or you can just remove the connection on the motherboard. Do we really need a light flashing when the HDD is accessed? I argue not. What colour is your existing LED?

The case speaker is for diagnosis only these days. If the PC is running fine it is seldom used outside of the happy little beep when the PC posts. Remove or connect, it's really up to you. If your motherboard doesn't have a diagnostic 2 digit dsiplay then it will be worth stowing the speaker somewhere safe in case your system fails to post for some reason.

Have a look at RS Electronics. They do a whole range of the "vandal resistant" switch. Not sure if a link would class as "competition" but they are easy enough to find - then once you're there start your search with "push button".
