Hi there,
A friend is openening a photo studio and needs a pc to do the photo editing, she is only going to be using vista and adobe photoshop. Dont matter about price but dont want un nessesary hardware.

A friend of hers has specced a system which i think is a bit silly and overpriced, this includes the following:

Thermaltake sword case with watercooling
Tyan Tempest Mobo
Intel Xeon Cpu Quad core 8mb cache (dont know which model but thought they all had 12mb cache)
2Gb DDR2 RAM (dont know brand)
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 pro 512mb
Transend 32GB solid state HDD
750GB Western Digital HDD
Lite On DVD re writer
MS wireless Keyboard Mouse Package
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Adobe Photoshop Retail CS3 Retail

She has been quoted £3200 inc vat

What u think? Overkill?

Seriously this is a joke? What sort of photo editing is she gonna be doing, holographic? Watercooling, Quad Core? For photoshop? Jeez! Does the price not include any monitor / printer? To be honest, if you're building yourself, I would have thought you could do it with no more than £1200

Hahaha. Anyone who specs a £3200 Vista system with 2GB of ram can safely be ignored.

Personally I'd go with something much less expensive. A Phenom 9950 or Q9300 with 8GB of ram, a pair of Samsung F1s in RAID via a proper hardware RAID controller, and a Radeon 4870 (because PS is getting GPU accelerated functions). Shouldn't cost more than £1200, sans peripherals.

If your friend doesn't already have one sorted out she should make sure and get a good S-IPS monitor to go with it, because photo work on a TN or VA is bad news.

LOL, i dont think he needs watercooling and a SSD for running photoshop.

^^ignore the fact there is two of everything, dont know why it does that.

I left out a hdd as im not sure how much space he would want

My thoughts exactly, tried to tell her. Its madness!!!!!

No monitor and no printer, looking at an Eizo ColorEdge CE240W - 24" Widescreen to go with this, heard they are one of the best for photo editing. £927, told her i could build her a pc for £2500 with this monitor all in. And would not notice any difference.

So anoyed by this, i could build myself an Uber gaming system for £3200 and she just using Photoshop. AAAAARGGG. lol

For the money she would be better off getting a Mac Pro, and upping the ram to 8GB stick a couple of samsung F1 drives in. Then she would have access to OSX and Vista, plus she will not need to upgrade for a very long time.

3200 quid for a PC with 2gb ram and a Radeon X1650 pro.... I would tell the seller pull the other one its got bells on.

Although I agree its overpriced you do need to remember that the Adobe Photoshop Retail CS3 Retail software costs around £600. But yes it can deffo be done a lot cheaper.
