Spec me a system worthy of... (for some reason the dormant geek thought of "Build(!) me an army worthy of Mordor") for the lazy ex-enthusiast.

It's been many years since my last build and my machine has given up the ghost (think single core and a sublime Coolermaster 'black widow' case of old) with little way in effort to replace it after a year of collecting dust and a dead K7 mobo.

Apple aversion and their mad costs dictate I will never buy a system from them. But I am ultra lazy these days so a good build with optimal components, attention to detail and stable at a mid-high range cost is in order.

Here are some requirements of my new build:

  • No overclocking required - but fast out of the box
  • Speedy enough to play new games at a good resolution (1920x1200 min) with ease (not that I play games but I want to have the option of firing up old hobbies :) )
  • Multi-monitor capability. I will do either 2 or 3 monitor setup at the above res
  • A blu-ray of sorts
  • A fast SSD required. Secondary HHD may be needed but if so it must be ultra quiet.
  • i7
  • Quiet. This is important. No-fuss quiet heatsinks and fans (e.g. 2x120mm fans or whatever) is required. I don't mind really as long as the solution is quiet :)
  • No monitors to be included (I feel the need to flex my opinionated ways for resolution (1024 vertical resolution is just wrong!) so I will do a little research for a couple of 24inchers or so...)

Budget...hmm...1500? ish? Cheaper is better of course but I do not want to push the boat out crazily I'm afraid.

Perhaps I've been a little too specific in the above and it requires some time and research. I figured I should see what thoughts come to mind on the overclocker continuum before i invest too much time :)

Your help, much needed, would be much appreciated and would probably result in me smoking a cigar, or other sort of leaf, to match my age old signature if someone could help! Hehehe - I forgot I made that sig, its so long since I've posted! :)

Actually - I'll probably just post a cigar in the post to whoever helps me out!

Oh, case needed also! Quiet and not obscene looking (if I can use my old black widow that would be nice but I feelIi need to use 120mm fans so it may be sold off)

Although I'm not equipped to offer you great advice, I did just have quite a similar thread start only yesterday so maybe take a look to get your started?

If it was my money I would get a fairly cheap case to leave more money left over for the real brains of the beast... I'm sure others will be along to help!

Will take a look.

p.s. I usually try to avoid the posting-without-searching faux pas but it turns out the volumes of messages are huge so I thought I'd test the waters :)

Oh just to make it clear I wasn't giving you an 'omg dont you ever search' put down :p Admittedly your situation is different as you want a full on rig not just the bare essentials.

I was also not suggest a blue ray drive, unless you're willing to fork out for software specifically to play it. Even VLCs let me down; there are work-arounds but its a faff and it doesn't officially support them.
