I'm putting together a new system for a mate who mostly plays Eve, CS, BF2142 and Medievel. He has up to £1500 to spend, but would like to keep it within £1000. He already has an LCD monitor so will be limited to 1280 * 1024 so, and is pretty much of the same opinion as me in the following areas:
1, £300 for a gfx card is simply not justifiable.
2, Why pay a huge premium for brand new kit when it will be half the price in 6 months.
3, He will probably dabble with overclocking, but it won't be a hardcore venture.
I've allways been an AMD fanboy (the last intel I had was a 487 Co processor), but it seems that Intel are currently blowing AMD away. I was thinking of something based on an Core duo 6400 or 6600 and a GF 7900 GTO.
I have'nt got a clue with respect to the best current MB, memory, HD and cases. He has 2gb of PC4000 ballistix, but I believe that this won't be fast enough for the Core duo. He also has a Lian Li case and an Enermax 500W PSU, but wants to replace the case with something a little less bland. He also has an Audigy 2, are the new XFi's that much better.
So I (and please offer alternative views) think he needs

MB
GFX
Memory
Case
Sound??
HD
CPU Cooler
So please, please help me get the best system for him.
