Hi all. First time poster here.

I am looking to build my first gaming rig. I have previously performed upgrades on normal pcs and have confidence enough to build my own using the guides on here. Currently have a PS3 and XBox360 but a few friends have talked me into the pc gaming idea when I said about getting a set up for the movies and photos.

I will be running it in my lounge on this HDTV http://m.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-3d-tv-47LW650T.jsp

My room is 18 feet long and distance will be about 14feet between me and tv.

I would like it to be as good as possible for as long as possible without upgrading for a few years at least. But in 2 or 3 years I would like to have the option to upgrade it a reasonable amount.

I use my current computer although slow for photo and some video editing. I also would like a reasonable sized SSD (256Gb-512Gb) for program's and a large HDD for downloading and storage of movies. I would also like to be able to play any games I so choose for a few years without problems.

I will be in USA in 4 weeks and found a store where I will be that has the 3930 and ASUS Rampage IV Extreme for £650 total. Which I was thinking to get when I'm there. Probably overkill but the saving helps make up for it. The 3960 is £280 more though both chips might drop in price a bit by the time I go.

I see the Samsung green Ram gets good reviews here so will probably add that too.

Anyways, I would like you to spec me the rest of the set up.

I would buy the 4GB Evga 680 if I thought it was going to be good enough for a long time. Plus some bragging rights to the lads lol.

I have £1750 to £2000 to spend on the rest of the set up. Although you don't need to spend the whole amount if you feel it's too much. However I would like to not need to spend anymore for anything else for as long as possible preferably 3 but hopefully 4-5 years if possible.

The reason being I have the funds now but with kids and house the funds to upgrade annually or every 2 years may not be possible.

Thanks
Phil

Hi and Welcome :)

I've got a few options for you and will try to explain my reasoning behind them.

Firstly, a primarily gaming set up

This includes an i5 2500K, which is great for gaming and still very fas for editing. If gaming is the main use, then I'd suggest this. Overclocking these is quite straight forward to get some really good performace. Also I know you said you were going to play on the TV but as you have the budget, why not a nice monitor too :) plenty of people use TVs, so stay with that if you want to. You can always buy a nice monitor later!
I've 'only' included a 2GB 680 as for 1080p it should be plenty, and you pay a lot more for 4GB. You might consider also a cheaper 7970/7950:
MSI HD 7970 3072MB
VTX3D HD 7970 X-Edition
VTX3D HD 7950 X-Edition

A set up more aimed at editing, but still very good for games!

More RAM, and the 6core for editing but also no monitor as it wouldn't fit in the budget :P

There's some ideas/starting points for you at least.

If I've misread and it's £2000 excluding the CPU/motherboard then let us know :)

Late night Beej?;)

Hi there guys.

I was writing the first post on iphone with someone distracting my train of thought LOL

I had set a budget of £3000 to get a prebuilt system. But as I am going to USA in 4 weeks I decided that I would build my own and buy the Mobo and CPU there. The Memory they place stocked isn't as good a value.

I decided that I would get the i7 3930 as it would give me the editing which although i wouldnt do daily i would do vast amounts when I would. Adding in the great gaming spec onto that. Especially at £650(current price) with the Asus Rampage IV Extreme Mobo.

I will at present use it solely in the lounge on the TV, part of the agreement with wife was no monitor in lounge, which i used to my advantage by saying it would cost more to do it her way LOL(her fault it cost so much) but would like the option to later on move it to the attic and have that area as a dedicated PC area where i could if i wanted have a 3 monitor set up for the gaming by simply adding in more GPU and overclocking or watercooling the system when if and when it needed it.

So basing that I can save £250 on Mobo and Chip in the States, I thought £2000 spent here at OCuk would be a target with the option if someone says for slightly more you could get this. I would have the £350 reserve. If not then it could be set aside for a monitor at a later stage when i would have the attic made into a useable space.

I would prefer to use the money now to get myself an Overkill OTT system that would make it easier to improve in a couple years time without having to spend too much, with my wife its easier to have her agree to more at the start than it is to spend more annually.

Hope this is enough info.

So far i liked the i7 suggestions of beejjacobs. But would like to see what suggestions come back with the new explained budget. Perhaps changing the 256Gb to a 512Gb and then spreading the rest of the money over the other components.

Regards sound i currently have a Denon 1912 AVR 5.1 system which i would be looking to play the sound through. Obviously if and when i do move it to the attic i would purchase a sound set up then. Her indoors will ok that since it will be her fault its needed as she will be shifting me out of the lounge cos the gaming will annoy her LOL.

In my house it isn't about not having the money its about getting the wife to allow me to spend it on stuff that isn't shoes or handbags LOL aka for me haha

Okay, well for £2000 without a CPU/motherboard, you can get a lot.... Definitely OTT for 1080p :p I chose this case purely for the red, there are loads of cases to choose from so I suggest you pick one as you can basically afford whichever one you want!

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 512GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT512M4SSD2) £469.99

1 x Cooler Master HAF X Gaming Tower Case - Black (RC-942) £139.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit - OEM (FQC-04649) £114.98

Total : £1,968.49 (includes shipping : £14.75).

Of course for 1080p a single 680 will run anything! So two if definitely overkill :p
For this kinda of budget, you'd probably want to look into getting a soundcard too, but I don't know enough about which is best.
