Spec me a Tablet

Just thinking of treating myself one for Xmas, but can't seem to find one that hits the spot.

I would like one to (in order):

  • fit in a jacket pocker (7"?)
  • surf on the move (I guess that means 3g)
  • read ebooks
  • act as a remote controller for TV, DVD Recorder and AV kit (IR blaster).
  • plug into stereos etc and play music
  • take/show pics/video
  • do emails

Not much really :). The closest (only) option I can find is the Galaxy Tab 2 7", but that has average reviews pointing to it being a bit underspecced for the price (sub optimal CPU and screen).

Any other options? I can wait till Xmas - anything coming down the road?

53 looks and no reply which tells me this might be too big an ask for the moment. I have done some more research, and will see what the prospective Ipad Mini will bring in a few weeks, though I don't want to get tied up with Apple particularly.

You've posted this in the wrong section, that might explain the lack of replies.

What about the Nexus 7? Apparently a 3G version will surface soon;

Failing that, normal Nexus 7 and tether it to your phone.

I can't remember, but doubt it has an IR transmitter on it - but do any of them? My experience of IR on phone has always been far too short range for using as a remote control. Just buy a Logitech Harmony for that ;)

Oops. What section should I be in? Can a mod redirect me?

I have a Harmony One, and like it (though it took ages to set it up just right with my AV kit), but thought a small tablet with all that extra real estate might provide a more user friendly solution.

It's not critical and a Nexus 7 with 3G might be enough to push me in that direction.

Looking at the mock ups of the Ipad Mini, it looks too large to be truly pocketable which will probably rule it out.

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 hits all the requirements, but has too many shortcuts to keep the price down: the screen, the processor, the crap cameras. I'd rather pay the premium for more up to date kit.

What is clear is that I am going to have to be patient and not dip my hand in my pocket too soon!
