My dad's 60'th birthday next week and we are struggling to know what to get him. He has always been intersted in the stars etc and so were thinking of a Telescope. We dont want to spend massive amounds and its between 4 people so it can be a few hundred but it needs to be available to pick up within a week. Something decent that he could upgrade in a year or so nothing insane money wise, im looking for a recomendation really for a starter scope around £250-£300.

Cheers

Stop struggling figuring out what to get. Think laterally just in case he really is'nt that interested in a telescope.

Howza bout the following...

A planisphere - plastic whizzywig thang you spin around to see what star systems are visible. Cheap as chips...

A flying lesson - probably about £140. Can be taken anytime or transferred to someone else if he does'nt fancy it.

A metal detector. About fifty quid, cheap as chips and he can ditch it or flog it if it's not his bag...

A horse riding lesson.

The list is endless...

Come to think of it I could do with a couple of 'em meself...

Techno-option on reflector telescopes ofcourse is PC-controlled. If I was more of a geek I'd have a go meself. I can see it now - a timber 10 foot circular rotating piece of kit at the end of the garden with a ladder to a captain's chair uptop, bar, microwave, easy chairs etc below. And preferably chav-proof...

If he likes looking at stars simply punch him in the nose when he's not expecting it, will cost nothing and he'll remember it for ages :D

Or if you really hate him, get him a subscription to that new magazine that makes a complete orrery over 52 weeks, only £6 per week, works out at £312 all in for a piece of mass produced tat you're not sure whether to show off or see a therapist about. That'll learn 'im.
