Hi guys,

I've just been given a sweet pioneer set-up by my brother, it's about 4 or 5 years old, but can keep up with the best of what today can offer.

now i've been rooting through my collection trying to find the perfect film to test them out on, as i've never had surround sound, but can't seem to find anything that's going to prove how great they are.

So i'm after a film that is full of surround sound effects, preferably something sci-fi ish, though i'm easy. Something to push the sub and basically just get the most out of the speakers.

go on then, off you scurrey!

Ta.

The first film i watched when i got my surround system was The Matrix, the first one. Well i say watched, i flicked to the cool parts, like when he dodges bullets, always sounds great in surround :p

wow, funilly enough fast and the furious and the matrix were the first 2 dvd's i tried.

Not sure if you guys will know but the system i have is a pioneer xv-dv55, i don't know all the specifications of it all, has anyone else got this system, if so what are the best settings to use on it?

What's the difference between DTS and Dolby???

Thanks

From EAD Home...

"Dolby Digital and DTS are similar in that they are both digital lossy audio coding technologies, which means they use “perceptual” data reduction techniques that are based on the characteristics of human hearing to mask the process, thereby preserving high fidelity sound. This is necessary in order to fit the typical 5.1-channel bitstream into a given storage space or transmission bandwidth. Beyond those basic similarities, the two formats are very different.

The main difference is that Dolby Digital is designed to handle anything from mono to full 5.1-channel sound formats, and typically runs at data rates of 192 to 448 kbps depending on the number of audio channels and the application. DTS was originally designed for a data rate of 1411 kbps, and typically runs at data rates of 754 or 1509 kbps depending on the data capacity available. In order to achieve lower data rates than DTS with no sacrifice in sound quality, Dolby Digital uses many sophisticated data reduction technologies that DTS lacks.

The most commonly used data rate for Dolby Digital on DVDs has increased to 448 kbps, thus assuring optimal sound quality. Meanwhile, DTS data rates have been cut in half for most new DVDs, down to 754 kbps, potentially decreasing sound quality."

The one would have done ;)

Its a brainless film but Chronicles of Riddick has some impressive scenes. I also agree with the gunfight in Heat, and the Matrix.

Gotta say though I love surround. Most of the time you dont notice it but suddenly you get a helicopter go past right next to your ear, or someones footsteps behind you... Its great.

(from games and films there)

the Abyss - classy film with great visuals and a fabulous all round soundtrack even before the sub sinks you get a decent work out for all your speakers

Top Gun also

best individual scene............... Empire's Star destroyer coming over your head at the beginning of Star Wars (A New Hope)....if you insist :D
