I'd like to build a small and quiet mini pc to put in my room so I can do some writing in peace and quiet. I was considering one of those tiny Linutop or an EeePC, but they're too expensive.

My budget would be under £150. I will only be using the machine for writing and light web browsing. I would consider using a small linux distro like Puppy. I don't need a monitor/keyboard etc.

Cheers!

AMD Semperon £15
Generic barebone AM2 case, psu and mobo £30-40
1GB DDR2 £10
36GB 2.5" HDD (quiet and cool) £25

PSU fan will be more than sufficient to cool this lot, you could even undervolt the Sempron and run it passive cooled for a near silent case.

Done.

if you could stretch your budget a little bit a Eee box would be perfect, and its tiny :)

I second this motion. I have an Asus B202 myself and it's perfect for what you want to do. There's also the added benefit of it being incredibly quiet and you can mount it to the back of your monitor with a vesa bracket (comes supplied).
