Spec me a Torch

Maglites are totally over rated, the only thing they're useful for is a makeshift weapon. You'd be much better off looking at either Fenix or Surefire torches, and the Surefire G2 pretty much fits your budget perfectly :).

Dads know best. 4 x D Maglite. Can't beat it.

The trouble is that so many of the 'youth of today' are into hair gel and pre-shave product and the like so aren't strong enough to carry that sort of torch and have to resort to girly LED stuff :)

Just tempted me to order one :D and at under £20, a bargain :)

Why not a 6D?

I bought that back in 1985 from a guy who came around our office offering torches. That was the biggest he had!

It's been well used over the years, it's older than a lot of people on here :)

Any of the Surefire range that fits your budget. Surefire 6P would be my recommendation, if you can find it in for sale in your price range.

Maglite's are very overrated, I've owned a fair few over the years and nowadays you can find many torches with better specs and performance for less money.

Another suggestion would be a head torch, very useful indeed. They can obviously be used on your head if you need your hands but also perfectly useable as a normal torch if you only need to use it for a short time. I'd recommend any of the Petzl range, I've had the tac-tikka model for 2 years and it's still on the original batteries despite having been used heavily on several excercises and 4 months in Afghanistan.

I bought the 5 led version of this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Petzl-MYO-3_W...ping_LightsLanternsTorches?hash=item2086f0c29 ... about 4 years ago. It's still going strong and is the best torch I have ever owned. Would buy another in an instant. 4AA batteries, with a halogen bulb for powerful long distance torching, and 5 (or 3) leds which you can set at 3 different intensity levels for close up work.

Good thing about maglites is that they do last. Bad thing is that they are heavy.

+1 for fenix - ive had maglites and other led torches but the fenix beats anything hands down. be aware there no gradual dimming though, it seems to run very brightly right up to the end and then stops abruptly........

Any of the Fenix range, really - if you want to use it as a weapon too then a 3D/4D Maglite with a Malkoff Devices drop-in would be the best option :p

Get a head torch, you'll be better off having both hands free. I got fed up with trying to balance a torch between my cheek and shoulder or between my teeth when using both hands, to read a book, go to the toilet, cook or while carrying something with both hands. You also rarely need a super powerful beam that can go silly distances either, you just need something that will light 5-10m in front of you so you can see where you're walking or what is in your hands. Also if you're traveling a lot of the bright mini LED torches use CR123A batteries which have limited availability in certain parts of the world, a safer bet would be one that uses AA or AAA batteries.

Thanks to DA for that tutorial because I think I may have been guilty on more than one occasion. Will remember for future but shame there isn't a plugin for IE with Photobucket as that is the one I have always used.

Get a LED Lenser P7. I have one and also a 4D Maglite and there is just no comparison. The LED Lenser beats it hands down.
