Spec me a Torch

So I want a Maglite 6D and an LED upgrade kit. Does anyone have a link to a compatible upgrade kit? Are they easy to fit?

Also, there seems to be two different 6D Maglites, one is a more expensive 'Blister' model. What's the difference?

The official Maglite LED upgrade only works with the 2 and 3 (maybe 4) cell C & D Maglites.

I got one for my 6 D cell Maglite off ebay and it worked a treat. It was a TerraLUX Maglite TLE-6EX MiniStar5 LED Upgrade and I paid £17.99.

I realised the 4d was a bit too big and bulky, bought led lenser p7 with a p3 for £45. couldnt resist the slimline profile and sexiness..

/awaits feeks onslaught... :p

I have the exact same. It is awesome. Brighter than my Dad's 4D Maggy and weighs less than the batteries used to power the bloody thing! Maglites are for dinosaurs who don't know they're extinct!

*hides*

I also have the LED Lenser H7 headtorch. Another goodun. Plus it has a proper slidey dimming switch. None of this nancy-boy click-10-times-to-find-right-brightness-mode you get these days.

Well, that's the most important thing ;).
I can't believe that people get Maglites, thinking 'the ludicrous size and running costs of this thing are easily offset by the fact that, in the extremely unlikely event that I need to assault a burglar in my home, I would definitely choose to do so with my torch rather than a knife or a golf club'. If you'd like a weapon, you use a separate item so that you can keep the torch shone in the assailant's face, and employ other methods to deal out harm.

Because to get away with using something as a weapon "because its the first thing you picked up", it needs to be something that the average person would have lying around.

I'm not some testosterone fueled 13 year old, I dont have Bowie knives and fake samurai swords lying around the house.
What I have is a big torch, with a lot of batteries in it in case of power cuts.

Plus with a decent torch they wouldn't be able to see for about 10 minutes anyway, so no need to bludgeon them with it.

I'm a bit of a flashlight fan - notice I have no Maglite in my collection - it's because they are ****.

And that's not all of them - just my camping load out!

Well my LD20 came a while back, it's a keeper and incredibly bright.

However it's not all roses, I'm not too keen on the barrel changing diameter like a lathe practice piece, I'd prefer just a basic straight and knurled design. The SOS mode could have been better if it was 6 flashes - 1 minute repeated which is generally the accepted distress signal that I've always been taught rather than morse SOS. The beam isn't focusable which is a bit of a downer. Even though I've been a bit picky these are all pretty minor problems and not deal breakers for me.

Fine, then leave the Maglite lying around handy in case you need to deal out harm to a burglar. Also buy a proper torch that actually lights things up for the times when you need to see things.

See which you use more and which costs you more to run :).

My Maglite is a "Proper torch" with the LED conversion its incredibly bright, as for running costs, its had one set of 6 batteries in 2 years, my good, its going to bankrupt me.

I have another brand name LED torch, and I've seen others in use as well, In fact last night we had a black out at work (a cold store) So I whipped home and took my Maglite in, it was suddenly so much easier to work with a torch that could light up half the yard by itself, rather than the light put out by the various Lensers and fenix offerings the other guys had.

Had my Lenser P7 out in total darkness last night for the first time since getting it whilst walking the dog out in the countryside and i couldnt believe how bright it actually was, thinking of getting the new M14 now.

I've got a 6D Maglite and whilst its good I'd look at a modern LED - the old maglites just can't keep up on that front.

I did get a cheap (£10) LED conversion kit for my Mini Maglite recently, and am well impressed with the result. About as good as the equivilant Maglite LED.

I bought a few lensers a while back. Was impressed with them at the beginning. But the brightness on them varies too much with the battery levels. Due to it being not regulated so I've read?

Have a few nitecore/fenix torches now. Very impressed with the Fenix LD10 size and output.

To atpbx, no question for that type of situation your maglite was probably more suitable. These other branded led torches are designed for different uses. One of them being easy to carry around, so when you do need it you'll more likely have one close to hand(not have to drive home to get it;))

I have a maglite myself, they have their uses. Would probably be more useful in the car though for me.

I did this thread a few weeks back too :-) My criteria was different though - I was after something that would turn on in the event of a power cut. Rather like a UPS for computers but in lighting instead. Thanks for the answers on my thread and on this one. Cheers.

Because they are not comparable, trust me.

My P7 is far better than my 4D cell maglite (which is the maglite LED version).

Oh dear look on ebay for the terralux maglite 700 lumens, it'll pretty much destroy your p7, btw your lenser p7 doesn't actually use an ssc p7 led it's just the model name they decided to use bit naughty really.

Have a look on deal extreme for the mte ssc p7, c or d bin led would be best along with at least two 18650 batteries and a trustfire charger, should all come to about £350 and it'll beat most of what has been mentioned, bar the elektrolumens kong 12 but that's 10,800 lumens. :D

Ive been using my LD20 as a desk lamp since i got it as I cba buying a new bulb for my proper desk lamp. Its great though, on the highest setting, pointing at my white ceiling it lights the whole room up and enables me to read or type with ease. Its almost like the main room light is on.

Also used it on a few trips out with the camera and its been great. The batteries last a decent amount of time and it only takes 60 mins to charge another 4 up.

It does however need the contacts cleaning every so often or it starts to flicker. Another annoying trait is that when the batteries are getting low, the rubber button cover will blow up like a balloon .

Apparently its down to heat buildup as the batteries drain?
