Spec me a tripod head please...

I bought myself one of those Manfrotto 190's yesterday in the Amazon sale, and at the time didn't realise it didn't come with a head! Doh! Anyway, Raymond Lin kindly recommended this magnificent looking chap here :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0049F327U/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
but I can't really justify that sort of expenditure at the moment.

So is there something comparable that costs less I am wondering?

It needs to be a ball head.

It's a nice head, very smooth action, and It's never flinched even with a gripped D200 & Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 attached

It's a very good head, I got mine off a recommendation from various people around the webs and my uncle, who also has one. You won't beat it for the money tbh

Depends what you need. I have the 496 and it was a mistake. Lock level locks both the ball and pan in one. Poor really.

When I get time to find a decent alternative I will sell my 496.

Edit 498 maybe or the one Raymond recommended. Buy cheap buy twice, save longer

Enjoy, as I said your requirements maybe much different to mine. I should have sold you mine, out of interest whats the cheapest you found the 496 for? So I know what to flog mine for roughly when I find another one to my requirements

I paid £32 for mine 2nd hand on TP a few months ago.

You shouldn't really skim on the head. If you have a budget then I would spend the top end of it, the head will make or break the pleasure of using the tripod. I would get an Arca Swiss if I could stretch that far !

Sorry for the bump but I remember this thread and need another ball to replace my 496. What attachment plate did you get that with Raymond? I presume it's the 055 series?

Trying to decide whether to get that or the 054. Then there's the different plates RC4, Q2 or Q5!

Mrk did an interesting review on a Camulet head. Not sure if it's around here, but I'll have a look
