Dear OcUKers,

As the time to travel to Uni approaches, the idea of getting a laptop has been looming for some time. However, recently I've been offered an internship placement that will involve living in uni accomodation for a long period of time, so I thought it was time to get my head down and get some ideas together for some portable tech.

Thing is, I'm not after an all-rounder, I've pretty specific requirements...

1.It needs to be able to easily play 1080p files (encoded to a relatively high level, X264 in matroska etc.) but crutially does not need to have a screen that can any way support this – I'm intending to use a new widescreen monitor from home with it, so don't need the spend the extra cash for it to have a flash screen too.

2.I currently use a PC-amp-stereo speakers setup at home, and I'll be looking to replicate that as best as possible (mainly achieved by shifting large amounts of gear :(). As such, I'm after something that has either inbuilt ability to produce output to the quality of at least my current M-Audio Audiophile 2496 or some additional external device that can provide this.

Aside from that I'm essentially looking for something that oozes value from its keys. My budget does have its limits, but I'm hoping I can safely afford something that does the above and not excessively too much more unless it is a no-brainer. Students are as students spend. :o

If you hadn't guessed, this lappy would be used primarily for student work, movie watching and sound reproduction. I can't see myself having a huge amount of time for gaming.

One last note: I could attempt to survive my internship without a new piece of folding gear IF the gurus on here reckoned there were serious value points to be earnt by holding off a few months to September. If there's no compelling evidence I'll be saving much though I'm inclined to jump in.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated! :D
Thanks. :)

your definetly gunna need external sound for the quality you seek

id seriously consider macbook pros with a student he discount. you definetly will need something with a speedy core2duo though but i dont really know which models are good (ive always used dells which have been fine for me)

if your using external screen have you thought about a htpc ? you would fit a decent soundcard in and even run a quad core

What kind of extrenal sound device would you suggest? :)

And no, I hadn't considered that. To be honest I know little about HTPCs :o, but got the impression they were both expensive and un-portable? In addition, I wouldn't pementantly be using the extra screen, only when I was at base.

How about a Dell Studio 15.....

512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570

320GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive

Genuine Windows Vista SP1™ Home Premium (64 BIT) - English

Fixed Internal DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software

ah yea you will be better off with laptop if your using it away from the halls.

cant really recommend a card for your needs but the if your happy with M audio there external cards usually get good writeups and theres a decent range of them

id just look for some reviews in audio magazines or websites and see whats recommended in your price range and suits what you need

Sounds particularly powerful, but how would the sound be catered for?

At that price, it's probably pushing the upper limits of my budget if I'll need an additional device, so I'd sooner tone down the power to fit the sound device in. Surely my spare power margain for 1080p is quite large on that spec?

My laptop has a processor with a similar processor, a 2ghz core 2 with 2mb cache and it handles 1080p h264 content fine

Most laptops have integrated audio, similar to that of standard PCs ie ok but not perfect, some laptops have an optical out or you could use a expresscard or usb external sound card, one last thing, I would suggest NOT getting a glossy screen, I'm a uni student and glossy screens reflect the celling lights like you would not believe

UPDATE: I've made this thread here exclusively on the audio aspect as it's quite a specialist question and seems to be getting some good light shed on the issue :D. What I really need now is just the laptop issue sorted.

Excellent. That kind of spec sounds just like what I'm after. I'm just not sure what makes to consider first. I think this may be an 'attack the pc mags for reviews' job.

And are that many laptops glossy screened then?

First off, the Acer 6530G seems a good start. It has the bonus of a bluray player and an HDMI output.

The 2.0GHz Duo is in place and the graphics ability seems adequate. The only downside is the screen is a tad larger than I'd ideally want to pay for, but it's not exactly money down the drain I guess.

I'm now considering the difference between the 6530G and the 6930G.

Anyone have any final thoughts before I take the plunge?

Also just a quick mention about this - I did come across the exceedingly good value haunts of the Dell Studio 15, but unfortunately they command £80-£100 for the addition of a bluray drive, which unforuntely blasts the device out of my price range. Real shame. :(

one thing that may be worth thinking about is does the uni recommend a particular laptop, eg my uni recomments thinkpads and we have an lenovo service centre in our library, if they can't fix it in an hour they give you another one until they have fixed your one

Interesting point! Hadn't thought about that. Had a quick pop to the site and apparently they will inspect any laptop, but then they do not offer any replacment stand-in services.

I've just discovered the HP HDX16t, but it seems to only be for sale in the US, which is a great shame. :(

Was this a special offer?

Looking at Studio 15's on the Dell site they have 2.0GHz CPUs and are £599...?

** edit: just seen some offers on their 'deals' pages which bring the price closer to this for a similar spec, nevermind me... :)
