As per title.. I'm after a UPS, prefferable an APC one for an IBM X226 server. Not being too up on what power is required from UPS's for different hardware I thought I'd ask here..

Its an older server running a Xeon 3.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 4x 74GB 10k SCSI drives and two 530W PSUs.

What would be the minimum VA required from a UPS to power it for a few minutes while it shuts down?

Needs to be as cheap as possible while still able to carry out what is needed because the company don't want to spend much money!

Thanks,
Andy

I would suggest a 750va would give you enough runtime to get a graceful shutdown.

I would strongly suggest that you connect only one PSU to the UPS and the other to conditioned mains. This will protect you from a UPS failure or a mains failure while the second power supply continues to power your server. It will additionally maximise your battery runtime since your server only 'needs' one PSU to work while shutting down.

In a dual psu configuration, if both are operational they should split the load rather than one being primary and the other secondary.

I wouldn't hook up both PSUs to any single UPS - if the UPS dies (which is more common at the cheaper end of the market) the server dies too.

Even if the PSUs are smart enough to only draw 50% of the required load each, you still need to reduce your single points of failure.

We use some 750s, 1000s, 1500s and 2200s and the weakest link is the battery, but in all those times the UPS has carried on providing power albeit not battery backed.

Not saying that one wont die eventually however :)

sidethink's idea of one on the UPS and another on a surge protected socket is actually a good idea (Why didn't I think of that? :D )
