is the case essential? can he use the dell case that he currently has or will it be too small?
Dell cases are rarely standard and rarely any good for cooling with anything but dells customised systems with ducts etc.

would be great to put a Conroe build into a Dell case..... like having a Ferrari engine in a Fiat Uno..............

Most dells have a conroe in them these days... ;)

some but not most............ yet...

anyway i meant that the one he has would probably be an older looking case that they probably don't use anymore........

You will need to get a new case.

You will probably need a new power supply. Going for an Antec case with an included PSU is a good money saver. However the above Lian Li case is of higher quality.

The above spec is really the overclockers choice i would advise as it get high results. If your not going to overclock i would by a more expensive proccessor like the core2 e6600.

The proccessor is more essential than the graphic card for video editing. He should also have a fast hard drive (seagate 7200.10 or raptor )

you dont need an amazing graphics card for video editing , i suggest 2gig of 800mhz fsb ram and a e6600, those are the 2 components that make the most difference - or save yourself a packet, either way good luck mate

I personally do a LOT of 3d modelling, and I find a good graphics card helps then, but thats the kind of video editing I do ;) Each to his own

Agree! Fastest possible CPU from word go. Stable mobo's also very important. Case with good airflow is important & a good PSU from a reputable brand because you'll be leaving the machine on for long hours to do its 'thing', maybe even a UPS? :)

EDIT

The x1900 is a waste of money in this scenario. No use to video editing whats so ever.

The top things to look out for:

CPU
RAM
HDD Read and write times.

I would go

DS3
6300
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz
74 gig raptor as system drive and two large seagate 7200.10's in RAID 0 as the video scratch disk.

And don't forget a decent PSU.

i use my PC for video editing and theres soemthign that is gettign overlooked here !

SILENCE !

i regard myPC as silent rnough, but say my mates PC, or my brothers are VERY loud. and thats never good for any kind of sound / video editing.
just somethign to look out for !
so id look at a big ass silent air cooler, like a ninja. and a silent PSU ( ive only ever used tagan so not sure how quiet others are. but mines silent )

Just a thought but if you have money to burn, you could buy a Gigabyte I-RAM for ultra fast accsess to your information much faster. They say the i-ram was designed for editing

no need for it really.
plus it wipes its self clean everytime you restart lol

btw, what are you doign about sound ?
thats pretty important to be honest !
i use an X-fi and hi-fi sepperates, but im no audiophile so dont shoot me :P

A high end CPU (e6600 or e6700) is more important than a high end GPU (7600GT or better). Couple it with a stable silent MB (Asus?) and a 3rd party CPU cooler (Titan).

I would suggest 2 x Raptors in RAID 0 for the system/programs and a large SATAII 16mb cache drive for storeage. 2Gb at the minimum of RAM (Gskill) finished off in a quality case (Lian Li PC7+).

Absolutely... four if you can get them which is why I asked what HD's he was using but seemed to have been ignored by the OP. My old Octane system has a rack with I think x20 (might be 16, can`t be bothered to look) SCSI 17GB HDs, with highend video editing you most certainly need HD speed :)
