spec me a washing machine

Oh, I thought you were going to stop posting in these sort of threads?

I haven't

Because carrying out repairs is the only possible way to determine how good a product is...

It is an amazing way of finding out how good a product is.
At Hotpoint/Creda we had a big repair shop which gave us loads of information about how good (or not) products were.
We also had field repair 'engineers' that sent data back just like breakdown services.
When I want to buy a new car I go to my AA & RAC mates which is a logical thing to do.

This is not me posting.

Bosch are a good brand, the only real problem is the price of spares should you need a repair out of warranty.

The main reason I'd buy another Bosch machine is the parts service and availability. All the parts catalogues are available online to anybody and they do next day delivery on stock items. For anyone fairly handy like myself, that's a big plus.

The other thing is Bosch offer fixed price repairs for about £100 and you can pay monthly. Now people say that's a rip off because the person with the blocked rinse pump is paying much more than they need to. But if you've got a degree of common sense and the ability to use Google, you can fix the very simple problems yourself and a fixed price repair is much more likely to work in your favour should you experience a catastrophic failure of an expensive part.

I had to replace the bearings on my 8 year old Bosch washer-dryer after the seal failed and let grease in the drum. Wished I paid for the fixed price repair by the time I'd got the thing apart!

I shopped around all over the Internet and the cheapest source for a bearing and seal kit? Direct from Bosch!

I've got an account at the local engineering factors and it wasn't worth getting the seal from Bosch and the bearings separately from them - I'd have only saved about £5. I was very surprised because most parts suppliers in any industry take the mickey with the price of replacement bearings.

Of course it's a good way, but I'm saying it's not the only way. OldCoals seemed to be dismissing Which? in favour of his own experience.

I worked in a domestic appliance test lab for 27 years and sent reports all around the world.
Believe me that since 2004 Indesit, Ariston, Creda & Hotpoint are dire and built with the cheapest parts possible.

:_)

so basically you worked in a lab longer than I've been living in my life

I'd trust your post then thanks :)

Quite sad really, 27 years in one job :(
I worked at the company for 27 years but always for Quality Control.
I had to learn the products inside out and volunteered to work on assembly lines both on production, repairing (snagging) & testing.
I 'was' proud that I was the only person on the factory with a full 'stamp' which meant I could build, test & repair any product.
My main job was as a Quality Audit Technician where I was responsible for quality going out of the warehouse doors and a big part of this involved lab testing.
During 1000s of quality meetings (after 2004) the new Italian owners wanted the quality of Bosch but with very cheap parts which was not going to happen and every week a new supplier would be found that could supply a part cheaper.
HOWEVER, the last lab testing I did was in September 2007 so who knows, the quality of Merloni products may have gone up BUT I DOUBT IT.

dimple 27 years in one job that is remarkable

how did you end up staying there that long and what was the final nail in the coffin that made you want to leave?

you sound like a person who can be committed to a cause if you believe in it

I recently bought an LG F1456QD. The machine is very quiet, and so far I've only used the cotton quick wash which takes just over an hour, but the clothes come out nice and clean. Build quality is good to my eye. LG is a long-established South Korean company and I feel it produces quality products. This washing machine guide has an overview of all the various washing machine brands and puts them in approximate order of merit.

I suppose you just go along with the flow. I had a job I liked, money was OK but most of all I loved the people I worked with which over the years was 1000s of them.
The Italians came in 2002, by 2004 they were making complete rubbish products and in early 2007 they announced a factory closure and it would be going to Poland.
Some on here think my slander of all products Merloni is anger but I swear on my kids lives it isn't because I witnessed daily the rubbish coming out of the factory.
By 2006 I kept a book containing management decisions so they wouldn't come back on me.
Around June 2007 we had to test the replacement products that were sent to us from the Poland factory and 2 of my team mates actually had tears rolling down their cheeks.
The amazing thing is that because we were an all established workforce, all 617 workers found employment elsewhere.

Which? don't agree with you on Hotpoint Dimple.

Only just seen this post.

You will find in other threads where I said I used to send my test lab results round the world including Which?
However, and I have said in this thread, it's been 5 years since I last did lab testing for Which? and quality may have changed in the domestic appliance industry but knowing how Merloni operate I doubt it.

Also take into account that Hotpoint, Creda, Indesit & Ariston are made with exactly the same parts by the same company and you have to ask why the other 3 aren't in that list?
