I’m after a good quality waterproof breathable winter jacket for walking the dog in the woods.

I don't have much hiking gear just a pair of Altberg Walking boots.

I have a run of the mill Parker that usually keeps me warm with a fleece underneath with a cagoule I carry in a pocket for when it rains.

The other day I was it with the dog and chucked it down for a good while…all was good but I sweated like a pig and felt horrible….

With Christmas coming up the family have offered a whip around to group buy a decent water proof winter jacket for my walks…

Any suggestions..

I don’t mind buying a winter jacket that is shower proof and buying an over layer waterproof jacket I put in over the top when it rains hard for long periods.

There are lots of suggestions on the net…like the Rab Firewall but I’ve read good and bad reports so thought I would ask here for you outdoor enthusiasts to guide me.

Thanks !

I've used a wax jacket for years (and a good one lasts decades)
If you're walking your dog in the woods you need to be wearing one. And wellies and a flat cap. :p

These worth a punt at £40? Don't look like they're very well padded so probably need to bulk up with layers.

Couldn't justify the £400 price of barbour

I bought a good serviceable waterproof from Regatta for £39.99 (reduced from £59.99) this year. Lightweight, breathable can be worn over two or more layers. Long sleeves and covers my bum when cycling.

Wear a few thin layers underneath, like a good fleece or jumper and then wear this waterproof jacket on top:

I've had this waterproof jacket for many years. Excellent in the rain and wind. Breathable too.

Rab jackets and stuff are quite good too. What are the negative points that you've read?

+1 for Trespass DLX gear. Have a 3-in-1 (Fleece zips into waterproof layer) and it's been great. Trespass seems to have a permanent Closing Down sale, so frequently find gear for 70% off RRP. "Frederic" is currently £151

If you don't want to spend that much, look at Mountain Warehouse - 3-in1 for £45:

If you dont mind looking like a soldier on his day off then Army surplus ripstop Gore-Tex jacket + bottle of Nikwax

Spray it with the nikwax regularly paying special attention to the seams ( a weak point of waterproof jackets in my use )

Just pop down to your local tk maxx, I picked up a columbia rain coat from there recently. No padding, I prefer to layer up.

They also sell helly Hansen stuff…

Get a shell jacket so you separate functions (waterproof vs insulating).
Be aware that although Gore-tex and similar are breathable and waterproof, they are not both at the same time due to physics (water vapor wont evaporate into teh atmosphere when it is raining). They also need to be looked after with regular washing and Nikwax (which doesn't waterproof, but helps shed some water for a while in a mostly futile attempt to get some breathability in the rain).

Also, breathability is heavily affected by all your mid-layers. If you are warm and sweaty you will get wet from sweat.

And if you are out for several hours then you can expect to get wet simply because you have giant holes for the head, arms and torso where water will enter.

Saying that, Gore-tex and similar are still the best options overall but cheap nylon waterproofs and the heavy gear used by fisherman etc. are going to be just as waterproof but zero breathability. Wax jackets and things are 10x worse

Sadly, Barbour appears to have overtaken Stone Island for footy-thug fashion...
Living in Pompey, I can no longer wear mine in good conscience, particularly as I have a dainty Cockapoo.

I cant reccomend a specific jacket, but I have owned a have a raab waterproof for about 5yrs and really rate it. Very water proof. Pit zips, and seems to be reasonable sturdy (no broken zips).

I had a Belstaff waxed jacket as a winter biking jacket (motorcycling). Since then I have gone for lightweight and layers. I am no longer a motorcyclist.
