hi ya i was wondering whats the cheapest windows home server i can build from over clockers, dont need any harddrives, tho will need lots of space to put them in, need to be energy efficent, and quite

thx inadvace

For how many disks do you need space?

EDIT: The reason I ask is twofold. It determines what case you need and what mobo you need, assuming you don't plan on using SATA host cards.

Im planning to turn my old iDEQ 200N into a server. Nice little case with 200w PSU, onboard graphics for setup (and will solve the not booting no graphics card problem) and SATA. Limited to only 2 SATA drives on the mobo tho, although I could fit 3 in the case. Currently running the trial version with an AMD XP 2100+ and 1gig DDR.

I'm going to go for the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P as it has eight SATA ports (along with Firewire and eSATA in case they're needed for expansion). The Abit AB9 Pro has nine SATA but it's an inferior board.

The processor will be one of the Intel E21xx Core 2 Duos and (thinking ahead a bit) I'm going to add 1GB RAM.

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on a case (most have far too many 5.25" bays and not enough 3.5"). At the moment I'm torn between trying to cram things into an Antec NSK 6580 and going for something bigger such as the Antec Titan 650. The Lian-Li PC V2100 PLUS is the biggest of the lot (and would be perfect for me) but also very expensive. Codegen do a cheap server case (the 4U-500) but Overclockers don't stock it.

Not entirely sure thats correct, many people swear by it. Personally I have the ds3p for my "WHS" but thats because I found one going cheap, brilliant mobo, got 8 drives attached and with 8 gb of ram in it.

Does WHS allow 8 gigs? I thought server 2003 was still only 32 bit and therefore limited to 4? Or are you not using server 2003 based software?

This would do for you, ali.

I quite like aurelius's suggestion but this is a bit cheaper.

and don't forget the whs operating system if thats the route you plan on going.

ye i know, the only sucky part could get a 500gb harddrive for the price, was thinking of trying lixus first to see what it was like, tho i thought that if i want to change to whs it would me messing around and i could lose some of my stuff i saved on it

What is lixus, other than:
  • The Latin word for 'boiled'
  • The ancient city of Lixus in Morocco
  • The insect genus which includes several species of weevils
  • Lixus corporation, a Japanese distribution company
  • A line of high-performance scientific cameras produced by German company Optologic
  • In Greek mythology, one of the sons of Aegyptus and Caliadne. He married (and was murdered by) Cleodora, daughter of Danaus and Polyxo.
