I'm looking for a netbook which will be used for mainly playing music [I'm not expecting sensational quality] editing Word/Excel documents and internet browsing. That's about it. I would ideally like it to have W7. Does anyone know of something that would fit the bill?

Hello. Um well, no more than £350 ideally.

Do I care if it has an optical drive? Ideally I'd like one, but I won't lose any sleep if it doesn't.

13" minimum if you want a DVD drive but TBH for your price you'r ebetter off getting a 11.6" and buying a USB optical drive for sub £50.

I was in a tech shop looking at the Acer Aspire ONE 751 at £245 a few days ago, 11.6", LED screem, healthy battery and excellent build quality + thin. Your requirements seem to suit it almost perfectly.

Might be just the one you are looking for as it has dolby headphones so your music experience should be decent with good headphones and the screen quality was superb as well.

Add to that a £50 Samsung slim USB DVDRW drive and you have a winning combo for your netbook bag.

You're not going to get any better CPU power in this class of netbook really and it's only going to be sluggish on demanding things.

For your usage that you've mentioned the only issue I could probably see in something like this is Flash video playback in the browser, this is likely to stutter perhaps.

Otherwise the only other netbook that is more ideal is the HP 311c but that is £50~ more expensive but does have excellent onboard speakers to boot should that interest you and various sound options.

Some are now supplied with Windows 7, but they cost more and only have Windows 7 Starter edition (with a few limitations) providing an upgrade to Windows 7 home premium for £70. It's just a tactic for Microsoft to make more money. I say don't worry about buying one with XP, just buy a home premium win 7 upgrade (which will upgrade XP) and you'll have what you want.

This HP DM1 netbook is the best buy at the moment:

You get a dual core CULV processor, much more powerful than atom, x4500mhd better than the common 950, 3GB DDR3 memory and a USB optical drive to boot! None of that at the expense of battery life either, only thing it cant really do is game, the 4500 is still quite limited.

Well, I kind of wish that I'd read your post earlier, I went ahead and bought a Samsung N110 at the weekend. Out of all the ways to choose online, there was no substitute for actually physically going into a shop and looking at things, investigating the choice of OSs etc etc. In the end what convinced me about the Samsung was the keypad which was much better for writing [which I do a lot of] than the Acer 1410 which was the other one I was considering.

It comes with W7 [starter, but what can you do], and I have to get used to the slowness over my home PC with 5GB RAM - this only has 1GB. But since I won't be using it for anything demanding it's no biggie. Music quality is pretty good too through earphones, and the battery life is excellent.
