Hey guys, I need a new router because the sky sagem one sucks ass.

What would you guys recommend?

My bro is going to be using it for wireless gaming on his xbox , and I will be playing on my 360, ps3 and pc via ethernet.

Also connecting 2 laptops via wireless, aswell as my iphone :)

Any sexual gems out there?

Thanks guys :)

P.S I have a 3 bedroom semi-detached house.

What ISP are you with? I'd suggest Netgear DG834N or perhaps even Linksys AM200 modem connected to Linksys WRT54GL router with Tomato firmware. But it all depends on who you are with for broadband and how much you can pay. :)

Hmm dunno about that one.

The AM200 and WRT54GL will work well together, several other OcUKers run this setup and I will soon join them. :D It lets you run Tomato on the WRT54GL which is a custom firmware allowing you to have more control over the router than other routers. :)

So would this router give me control over how much data is going to each pc/device/console?

This would be cool, because I could half the bandwith to say my pc for downloading and his xbox 360 - say 300kb each, so it doesnt interfere with each other and I dont cause him to lag :)

Is that router good for gaming? At the moment, my brothers 360 cuts out to the rang of the router being pants, how would this be better? This is why I thought a n router - for the range.

You could indeed setup QoS on the router which should do what you want.

Would have thought wired gaming re the Xbox would be better. Better pings and less lag due to the signals being wired and not wireless. The WRT54GL would probably have a better range than the Sky modem you have now. And if you check out this thread, near the bottom it is show how to increase the wireless powah!

lol :)

Would it also increase the range? I assume this would eventually kill the router though?

To be quite fair, I think I want to avoid that router, even though it looks good - want something newer. What others would you guys recommend?

Would be great if it had qos.

Needs to be good for gaming and have a good range :)

P.S where's a good place for wireless router reviews, can't really grab any recent ones off the web.

And also, cheers mark for your help buddy :)

Newer?! Cheeky get! :p As for guys, which guys? Just you and me in here so far. :D

Think you might go near or over £80 budget if you want QoS.

Sorry, didnt mean to upset you - its a bit tamato , tomarto on the whole situation....

Lame! :D

Don't care really abut going over as that QoS would be extremely useful.

Very lame. :p I'm not 100% on modems/routers but I think it is either a decent price for an AM200/WRT54GL combo with a firmware that offers QoS or spending quite a bit more than £80 to get QoS from the off. Like £120+ for QoS from the off.

Its the range im concerned about though ya see.

The AM200/WRT54GL range will be OK. What kind of distances are we speaking? Most routers should be OK for a pretty decent wireless range unless you have thick brick walls between router and wireless clients.

If this is about brother gaming on Xbox360 I would seriously urge you to think about putting him on a wired connection to the router. You could connect to his PC and then use http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessgamingreceiver/default.htm to let him game wirelessly in his room. Or this http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessnetadapter/.

Theres no way a cable would be any good, too far away.

Hes using the wireless adapter, so he wouldnt need to do what you said with the pc :)

Hmm. How about getting the AM200/WRT54GL but getting some kind of repeater or wireless extender connected to the WRT54GL by cable so that the repeater is halfway between where the router would be and your brother. Then the distance between the Xbox and the nearest wireless access point would be much less of a problem. :)
