I hate these threads but I'm pleading with you; the laptop world is all greek to me.

My job has evolved and as a result of this, I've been told to find a laptop for myself.

Budgetwise, dunno. I don't want to waltz in and ask for something obscene. Maybe 700ish?

I don't want a desktop replacement; it needs to be portable.

It will be used for 2d image work (so RAM and graphic/colour reproduction are key rather than z0mg gaming/3d cards), a bit of flash dev, office stuff, site maintenance and management...

Wireless so I can take it around site and still access the server...If it has a SIM slot for 3g/hsdpawhateveritis then all the better.

T'gaffer needs to be able to go and buy it so obscure websites ain't the thing. Purpleshirts or similar.

your buying choices are limited by keeping it high street shops only.

But here you go. Both these fit into your price range.

HP DV4-1100EA £649

Sony VGN-CR42S/L £699

Both 14.1 inch

You would be much better off buying online i think,

Lenovo are highly recommended.

Or even an OCUK custom built?

I have a lenovo laptop and its brilliant. Never had a problem and it has lots of nice little features such as a subtle light just bright enough so you can see the keyboard in the dark.

Also try and get something with an ATI graphics chipset and a LED screen as the colour reproduction is far better than that of intel / Nvidia for 2D. I have to do a fair amount of photoshop work on the move and my Dell laptop with it's ATI graphics and LED screen is perfect for the job.

Thanks for the ideas...I think somewhere like Dell would be the kind of acceptable online place.

Its my day off today anyway so I'm gonna go for a wander later and see what I can find...
