Evening. :)

Been using a little SONY Hi-Fi connected to my PC for the best part of 7 years and finally want to retire it. I'm not interested in a nasty Logitech etc system so was hoping I could perhaps secure a decent amp and pair of stereo speakers for a budget of £400~

I can't use the auction site and don't want 2nd hand (warranty repairs etc) so we need to be talking retail prices with the recommendations. I was thinking after a little look on my own that a Marantz PM6005 & a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 220's would be nice starting gear?

May be best going to richer sounds or an independent to have a listen for yourself.

One system for one person will sound great but crap for someone else.

I know I will get slated for this but for straight out the box good sound I do like BOSE!

I'd echo what GinG said about going for a demo.

There was a thread on here about a week ago that proves the point. The guy bought an amp and speakers - both fairly positively reviewed, and both on special offer deals - but bought without hearing first. He hated the combo. Took it back and did the proper demo thing..... Ended up with completely different gear but much happier with the result.
