Spec me an ADSL provider

Hi all

Well, ive finally fallen out with Supanet. Ran some speed tests last nite that took 3 hours and got results of 1kbs, 2kbs, and 0kbs. Supanets response, "we impliment a fair usage policy that will impose a 'speed limit' at peak times if you download heavily".... so turning off my internet is considered a 'speed limit'... whatever!

So, im after a new ADSL provider. We have a number of people using the internet in my house so would want a Max connection (up to 8mbit, which translates to about 5.5mbit down our line) and to have no dfownload limit to. Also, no 'fair usage policy' would be nice. Sky would be ideal... but unfortunately we cant get Sky yet.

There's no such thing as no FUP. Those that say they don't are either lying or traffic shaping everyone regardless of usage.

This is a somewhat open ended question without knowing what providers are available at your exchange. LLU would be best as not being bound by BT wholesale bandwidth costs means any FUPs tend to be more leanient aswell as higher speeds and lower prices as a rule.
Check out your exchange on samknows!

BT have been good to me and friends of mine, when I signed up they even sent me a free printer/scanner which I hadn't seen advertised as part of the deal. Only drawback is they cap p2p in the daytime. Hope this helps. :)

Sky advertises as having no fair usage policy. Im not concerned about them occasionally throttling the line, I just dont want to end up in the current situation where I have practicaly no internet and Supanet are just saying "oh, its our fair usage policy, tough".

Ive had a look on samknows. It appears all i can get is BT ADSL and BT ADSL Max. No LLUs are setup on my exchange. I assume that this means any provider I get will be a BT reseller, even if they are an LLU provider elsewhere?

So, spec me a decent unlimited no fair usage policy BT ADSL Max reseller.
:) cheers

well BT resale = FUPs, nothing you can do about that. BT Wholesale bandwidth isn't cheap and ISPs will try and get as many connections out of every last Mbit of it as they can because they are all businesses and they have to make money. Price wise if you have o2 contracts for mobile then you can get £5 off your monthly charge with them, and I'm assuming this is not dependant on using their LLU service.
I currently use Demon. They're more business orientated but their FUP doesn't kick in until about 80-100GB in a month. It's not published as that for legal fiddlings but if you ask their support desk they will tell you that this is the point at which they'll start taking an interest in your usage levels.
Boyond that my usefulness ends as I haven't really been looking due to my intentions to go LLU when my current contract comes up for renewal as I'm lucky enough to have o2 mobile and o2 in my exchange :) which means ADSL2+, free email to my phone and 100 extra free texts per month for about the same as I'm paying now for 8meg.

:P Dont rub it in!

Ok, I figured that all resellers will inherit aspects of the BT FUP anyway. It just frustrating that my internet has been effectively 'turned off' because ive downloaded over 30GB in the last 30 days... which when you buy games off Steam, is very easy to do! So if I cant get away from FUPs then atleast id like some reasonable ones. ADSL24 consider 8am - 10pm as being peak, which is stupid! Something like 6pm - 10pm would be more realistic, as I throttle back any downloads at this time anyway, I cant game and torrent at the same time! :)

Il have a look into o2 and Demon. Cheers

I have just moved to Titan ADSL 30 peak 300 off peak for £19.99. (I cant get be or o2)

Speeds been good, but I have only been with them since the 10th Nov.

o2 state they dont have any formal usage limits, but will investigate and restrict your access hsould you be deemed 'unfair'.... They also appear to ahve a single FUP that covers both the LLU and BT Reseller products? Does anyone have any more information on these? Im happy to have my internet throttled to say 1Mbit at peak times should I have downloaded loads, but being tunred off is to much.

If o2's FUP is the same for 24 meg LLU as 8meg resale then you're sorted. Anything short of 100GB "trigger point" on 24meg is silly really considering the speeds it's capable of.

ok as you have stated you cant llu so your only real sensible option and the best is an enta reseller @ £19.99 for their 30gb peak-300gb offpeak deal. If you go will O2 its just a BT connect product & will be traffic shaped, upto 8mb with a 40gb cap & its traffic shaped. Please look into entanet resellers mainly because they offer 1 month contracts.

Kev!

Ive no problem with shaping realy, i just dont want to be treated like i am now, with the connection being effectively shut off.

Im going to contact o2 to get the written terms and conditions for the BT reseller product, as I cant belive its the same as the LLU, because as said, it has to inherit the BT FUP.

The trouble with Enta (and resellers) is they consider 8am till 10pm 'peak', which is stupid, and if you go over your limit, your cut off and fined.

Are you at home or uni? As this (Wiltshire) is a good area for VM Cable.

Lol, really should change that location thing, finished uni in may...

but yes, VM may be good in Wiltshire but:

a) while at Uni I had the worst experience with VM. They broke the cable BB in Plymouth and didnt fix it for 18 months, meaning shoddy speeds all the time

b) I live in the sticks. Our exchange only got BB in 2005, and ADSL Max in 2007. Cable hasnt reached us yet, and neither has any LLU provider. Its BT Reseller or nothing. :(

I was with adsl24 till March of this year & found the caps to be good, I'd download most of my stuff at night as the 300gb off peak time was great & keep the 30gb for essential stuff. There is another option & pay £30 for an unlimited 2mb fixed service which I was on prior to leaving them in the march.

I found adsl24 quite good but if you take the BT route your asking for bother, also with O2 on the BT connect package the FUP will apply & U will be shaped to hell. That 40gb is not just download its the upload ratio aswell so you need to remember that. There are lots of very unhappy people who have 02 via BT but if you check out the o2 thread you can get it for £12.50 via an f&f deal if your desperate.

Anyway I just wanted to talk you out of that O2 idea & back to the sensible enta route :D mind U could get a free a lappy & go with AOL/CPW ;)

8am to 10pm as 'peak' is far from sensible. I already throttle my downloads in the evenings, but im not a fan of a 14 hour peak period!

Its a toss up between cheaper shaped BT reseller or unshaped but much more restrictive limits Enta... And there are unhappy people with every supplier, there always will be. Gonna email o2 now for confirmation on theif FUP.
