Guys, I know diddly squat about aio coolers.

The story is I am thinking of upgrading to a 9800x3d and wondering if it is finally time to move away from air coolers and get an aio.

I have a Phanteks p400a case.

I read online conflicting things. Some say the p400a cant fit an aio on the other hand I have seen pictures of people with the p400a and an aio mounted.

What does 240 and 360 mean? Is that the size of the radiator, ie 3 fans vs 2 fans?

Any one recommend a decent aio that will fit in my p400a for a 9800x3d?

I was thinking it would need to be mounted on the top of the case.

On the other hand should I just keep it simple and stick with an air cooler?

240 is effectively equal to 2x120mm fan mounts.
280 would be 2x140mm fan mounts.
360 is 3x120mm fan mounts.

Yes, I'd just get a peerless assassin/phantom spirit or a freezer 36 (may have to tweak the fan curve for best results), since the 9800X3D is not a high power draw CPU.

I've heard good things about the peerless assassin/phantom spirit.

I normally buy Noctua but the price is double that of the Thermaltake cooler.

According to this I can request a AM4 mounting kit from Noctua for my D14.

Question.... the mounting kit says its for AM4 and AM5.

If I already have my cooler and all the parts does that mean it is compatible with AM5?

Says here:

All coolers compatible with AM4 are also compatible with AM5, as the mounting system hasn't changed in that regard.

So it seems I don't even need a mounting kit.

Wow... I know Noctua is expensive, but not only do you get top tier performance but you get some serious longevity as well.

I bought my NH-D14 with my 3570k around 2012 and it looks like in 2025 I am about to use it with another new CPU.

I used the peerless assassin for a couple of days on my 9800X3D whilst waiting for a Thermaltake frozen vision to arrive, and it was fine.
In fact, it’s surplus to requirements now, so if you want one just pay the postage and I’ll send it to you (I’ve no use for it).

That's a great offer mate thanks. I think though it seems I can reuse my Noctua.
