Hi Folks,
Im helping a friend build their first system and need some advice.

Its going to be a general all rounder, so not a gaming beast but should be able to run some games without too many issues. Aside from that some light photoshop and then just the usual home use.

SSD is preferably 256GB just for future proofing, then maybe 2TB storage. Case should be roomy enough but nothing flashy with neon lights etc, and in general quieter components are better if possible, though not looking for silent. Oh and not sure if its doable but they would like lots of USB ports – not sure if any cases have loads of extra ones?

Don’t need keyboard / mouse / monitor, but do need an OS. Would be happy with Win 7 rather than 8 but I’m not sure whats the best deal these days – how much dearer is full retail now so that you can play with swapping bits out in the future without issues?

Cheers

I'd get W8, it's fantastic to use, and very speedy on a SSD plus is newer!

Spec above looks great, nice all rounder there, would switch the HDD for a Seagate one, as the greens are slower, but eco-friendly if you're into all that.

Cheers, looks good so far.

The GPU is probably overkill as you say - is there any way we can drop that back a bit and get to an i7?

Youre probably right about Win8, though at the moment its just fear of desktop and start menu etc etc, though maybe 8.1 will cure those fears.

Thanks a lot

The GPU is overpowered, and you have no need for an i7, that'll just be throwing money away, you might aswell get a lesser (but still amazing value) GPU like this one (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-013-VX) and save the extra...

Not too keen on the case, id rather go for this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-XG&groupid=2362&catid=1572

The Z87-HD3 has the following USB ports.

USB 3 : 4x on the back panel, 2x via USB internal front header
USB 2 : 2x on the back panel, 6x via USB internal headers

Thing is with the Free P&P offer on the GPU it only works out £18.15 more than the 7870LE, so does seem too good to miss if the games played are demanding.

What games will be played? As the 7870LE could also be overkill.

If you get the case in Dooms like, bare in mind you won't be able to use the USB3 port on it, if your using the 2 USB3 ports on the 3.5" USB Bay. Unless you got a mobo with a 2nd USB3 header.
