Afternoon All, just after some help choosing a new phone.
Currently have a Nokia 8, which whilst it hasn't been receiving any updates for a while, does everything I need it to do - it's still pretty fast, has a great screen, good build quality and isn't too big to fit in a shirt pocket.
Only downside is the battery now doesn't seem to be holding charge particularly well and doesn't seem worth replacing.
My budget is around £250-£300 (The Nokia 8 cost me £250 and that was the most expensive phone I've owned
), but would like something similar that is going to last another 3-4 years.
- I'd prefer a phone similar size to the Nokia 8 (151.5mm x 73.7mm x 7.9mm) but appreciate there aren't many choices in that regard, so may have to compromise.
- 5G handset would be preferred for a bit of longevity, as would a reasonable amount of RAM (probably at least 6GB?)
- microSD slot (as I've always stored photos/music/crap here rather than "wasting" faster internal storage), 64GB storage has always been fine on my Nokia 8 as a result
- Decent battery life
- Not particularly bothered about the camera, as long as it's reasonable - certainly don't "need" a 50MP+ sensor - I have a DSLR that I do any "decent" photography with
The models I've seen so far that meet most of the criteria are:
- Samsung Galaxy A33 5G - historically not been a fan of Samsungs due to bloat and again slow/not guaranteed OS updates. Android 12 OOB, Fastest processor/GPU I think of these - £300
- Moto G82 5G - "safe" choice, as my Wife and Kids have Motorolas, I've had Motorolas before, but the length of support/speed of new updates always seems to have been a problem? Comes with Android 12 out of the box though - £280
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G - Good software policy (3 android releases + long security update period?), Premium looking. Negatives are the size and unsure on the OS "Skin" - £250
- Pixel 6a - Releasing soon, stock Android, long official support (+probably 3rd party support afterwards), reasonable specs, Perfect Size. Downsides are much worse Gorilla Glass on the screen? No microSD slot And obviously cost - £399 is a big jump and not sure if it's worth the extra?
