Spec me an atom board for use in a NAS.

Hi

new here but not new to building NAS

I use a supermicro X7SPA-HF in my unraid 20TB nas set up bit pricey but is server class, and has IMPI ( KVM over IP ) means I can stick my nas in the loft and manage it from a console on any pc in the house on my network.

it two year old now never missed a beat and low power too.

D525 dual core and 4gb ram plenty for NAS duties has 6 On board SATA plus expandable with their expansion 8 port sata card

The problem with most atom boards is they don't come with very many sata ports that allow expansion. So you will most likely need a board that comes with at least 4 sata ports, and a PCI or PCIe slot to add a RAID card if you want to expand beyond that.

Once you factor all that in, you're looking at a cost somewhere similar to a prebuilt NAS from Synology, QNAP or Asustor. I used to build my own NAS and use FreeNAS. But I've since switched to Synology.
