Spec me an engagement ring

Spend 2k on an engagement ring expect the other one to be expensive also, particularly if it's a set.

You don't need to spend thousands, unless you're happy to, you'll soon spend 2k on random bits for the wedding....so take that as you will.

As a side note, we just purchased our wedding rings from Hannah Rose London, fantastic service and generally cheaper as most is done at trade prices. We went there, decided on simple rings (no detail, stones, just rings) and the owner went out back to make our rings and came back 30mins later (if that) with our rings made

I'd use 77 Diamonds and get a small, nice ring as an engagement ring, then a few years down the road you can upgrade.

I got my fiancée a 0.25ct diamond ring for our engagement, then a handmade wedding ring, a 1.0ct total from Hearts on Fire (5 stones) for the birth of 1st child and finally (I hope !!) a 1.0 ct solitaire from 77 Diamonds for our 2nd child. This is over a period of 8 years and the rings were also part Xmas present, part celebration - she really appreciated that (as did my wallet!).

If you buy big early it is very expensive to match of surpass it!

She mainly wears the wedding ring and solitaire - just a note, it costs me over £140 a year to insure (the spending never stops!)

Never think of them as investments as selling something with such a sentimental value is unthinkable - buy a smaller ring and put the money away for a rainy day!

Spending more than your budget doesn't make someone an idiot. However, good on your wife for not caring about wearing a cheap ring :p

I proposed with a £12 argos ring and she would have happily kept it. Neither of us can tell a £50 ring from a £5k one anyway. Think she spent £300ish in the end, her friend is a jeweller & made it her as a wedding present.

The ring(s) I posted are 3 rings (engagement, wedding and eternity) so no more rings needed... if you split the 4k between 3 it's only £1333 each

I got one custom made - and it was not only cheaper than the high street, but also made it more personal. You know your girlfriend better than any of us, so only you can judge what she'd like or not.

Personally, for me, I just couldn't buy one off the high street - it just didn't feel special. That's not to say that for you or others it is any less special or whatever, it is very subjective.

We had one custom made by a local high street jeweller, based off a designer ring (Think it was Tiffany). Came in as cheap as anything we could find online and we got to choose every aspect of it.

That's not true, it's worth more than what I paid for it.

Not true if you are basing this on an insurance appraisal I'm afraid.

They are typically appraised far higher than the new purchase price, and the purchase price is far higher than the second hand value. The second hand jewellery market is awful.

I bought my wife a fairly expensive ring as well for the reasons many have stated, but an investment for a rainy day was not one of them. As mentioned already, they make a terrible investment.

I went and looked, decided I am the worst person in the World to choose any piece of jewelry having bought and owned precisely zero pieces in 40 years. I proposed and explained I would rather she chose and we agreed a budget, I planned for 20% more and she happily chose one above the agreed budget but in my budget. But I made sure I was moderately romantic for the proposal in my own unique way.

Wedding ring itself, if just a band, should be hudreds rather than thousands. My platinum ring that the wife got me was £400.

There are also some really nice titanium bands you can get for very little.
