absolutely no preference on brand... erm, preferably new but i wouldn't particularly be fussed with a used one.

Nikon D3000 is a nice DSLR for just under your budget but it is Nikon's poorest camera.

The Nikon D40 is older with less pixels than the newer models but it is a better camera than the D3000 and cheaper!

Probably be closer to £450 but well worth it.

If you can't stretch that far then...

...will do a decent job too.

Go round the camera shops and try some kit. It's generally not the case that there are good and bad dSLRs. It's more about weighing up the differences.

Obviously Canon and Nikon will have the biggest range of lenses and accessories available.

Sony have got a couple of new SDLR's coming out soon. The A290 looks interesting at approx £390

Also, what about the Pentax K-x?

Generally speaking stick with canikon. They have the best systems behind them ATM.
