not like harry potter...something more dark would be nice.

Had to check, erm not much out there with the mage stuff... Ah, here's one I remember, try Midnight Chronicles. Low budget type thing, but I actually quite enjoyed it. The Conan films & Red Sonja? Always end up watching them when they come on.
