Hi OcUK,

So I just bought my first baby bike and the biggest problem for me is getting lost. As a Northerner without any real seance of direction living in Central London, I get lost a lot!

I'm looking for a waterproof handlebar mount so I can use maps on my iPhone. I've had a look around but it's hard to see which ones might be well made and which ones are just cheap Asian imports.

Anyone own one that they would recommend?

I'm a bit concerned that being new to a bike and to riding in central London the last thing you want is something that's going to cause you to loose focus on your riding and what the traffic and pedestrians around you are doing. If you have to have GPS guidance my advice would be to put your phone in your jacket and listen to the directions via headphones.

Came in to say this, but I notice it's been said already! Concentrate on learning to ride properly before you start introducing distractions like sat navs. If you really must, do the headphone thing.

I find it's better to learn your way around using maps before the journey and signs during the journey. Yes, you may have to pull over now and then to check you're headed in the right direction, but your riding and sense of direction will both improve in time.

Sorry for the delayed responce.

Thank you very much for your input. I disregard all of it!

Totally kidding, I think you both make a very valid point and that has changed my mind. I do however think I need GPS. Are you suggesting putting an ear phone in with an app running feeding me instructions?

I'm not recommending it as I think anything that will detract from your ability to concentrate is a bad idea, but it would certainly be a better option than having a phone screen vying for your attention, if as you say you must have some form of Sat Nav guidance.

Maybe you're not experienced enough to know that the only way to survive on a bike in big city traffic is to treat each and every other road vehicle as if it's being driven by a homicidal maniac, each pedestrian as a suicidal lemming, and each cyclist as a psychopath with no regard for traffic laws or direction. It's only by anticipating the stupidity of your fellow human beings that you'll avoid being knocked off your bike and your ability to do so will be hampered if you are unable to concentrate properly. My advice would be to buy an A-Z, familiarize yourself with the routes you're likely to take and go out in the evening to practice ride them when the traffic isn't so bad, that way you'll get to enjoy riding your bike more and be able to be more relaxed and observant in traffic.
