Spec me an iPod dock

Does it have to be portable?
Because to be honest mate I would get some second hand speakers and amp+3.5mm cable, you could find a good deal on the bay that would outperform any of these "docks".

Edit: Not in budget
B&W Zeppelin. B&W Zeppelin mini.
Harmon/Kardon Go & Play. (I've got one :D )
Vita Audio R2i or R4.
Vita are outstanding quality, compact and packed with gadgets like music over Bluetooth from iPhone, love seeing them at the A/V show, funny Irish blokes with a great product.

That's my shortlist, although there are hundreds of awesome ones out there!

B&W Zeppelin for the win, avoid the mini version though as I've read about many problem with it over at AVForums.

Edit sorry just saw your budget, my Girlfriend has the Gear 4 Street Party III Portable iPod Speaker Dock.
She got it from A famous high street retailer for £40. Great value for money and sounds great for the price ;).

price range?

theres no point in spending ££££ on amplifier & speakers or a great dock if you are going to be using an ipod with compressed audio as the quality will be poor

Amplifier and speakers second hand in that case. Something like what I had, a Cambridge Audio A1 and some Mission M71 bookshelf speakers. (I sold these 2 for £60)

Then you can save and upgrade each when you need and also your soundcard

for the best sound it has to be wadia or onkyo ,why because iirc there are only 3 makers (maybe alpine is 3rd cant remember)with a licence to bypass the ipods internal dac ,you can then connect to your own dac/amp and have something abit special ,i think onkyos digital transport comes in at a shade over £100

i dont see the point in these docks. i stopped using my creative T20s with my pc a while ago. so my stereo system consists of an official ipod dock plugged into the mains and the two creative T20s either side. cost me about £50 in total as my T20s were off our MM and so was the ipod dock.

sure the bigger more expensive ipod docks may be slightly better sound quality, but they arent much better than my setup which is arguable much better VFM

Is a B&W Zeppelin (original, not mini) for £300 a good deal? Or for the best dock around that price should I be looking at newer docks?

I've been asked to find my dad the best possible dock for under £500, and though it's possible that going closer to his budget may get me something a bit better, the Zeppelin just looks a thing of beauty and £300 for it seems foolish to ignore.

edit: before anybody advises a speaker system instead, he's adamant that he wants a dock.
