Hi all, I got my mum an iPod nano for Christmas and rather simultaneously her CD-Player/Speaker system in the living room broke. It seems to me the best way to maximise the usage of her iPod and to solve her lack of music issue is to get one of those dock/speaker things, though I've listened to a few and the quality tends to be a bit dodgy. Can anyone recommend a specific make/model which is actually half decent? Sub-£100 would be preferred!

Thanks everyone :)

i saw some JBL docks at the marks and spencers outlet for sale refurbished:D think they were £70 which isnt bad at all :D however i didnt hear it but i have beard the BOSE one and that packs some nice bass :D

Logitech Jive Box is pretty good and it's £99.99 (so sub £100 lol).

Thats what we have and the sound is really good.

I got a Sony one out of my local Tesco direct for £79.99 and to be honest its really really good. I was very surprised for the money to quality ratio but it packs a good sound and has nice bass too. In one word "impressed".

I have found the intempo to be very good (Intempo IDS 03B), tried out some JBL and Altec Lansing stuff but found them to be very bright with very poor bass.

A Hi-Fi with a cable to connect to the ipod...

That's a good point, I'm not really much for audio equipment so it didn't occur to me- I assume any hifi with an 'aux' input will work? And I'll need a stereo-stereo cable?

Any recommendations for a hifi? I know these come pretty cheap these day, £50 and under would be awesome, CD player would be a plus too :)

we have the bose portable dock sounds ace and nonitor audios in the kitchen and dining room and beleive me they are awsum for the size both will fill your room. very inpressed with the bose and its battery life

"Our expert listening panel felt the lower frequencies to be excessive and too boomy. Higher frequencies were scratchy but it has plenty of energy and the maximum sound level was good. The sound quality was a little unnatural but warm, but overall quite listenable and one of the better speaker docks available."

Where can you get them sub £100 ?

Bose sound dock is amazing. They've done a few versions now, so you might be able to get the first one quite cheap second hand.

Definitely the best room filling speakers I've heard in any sound dock.

coming from someone that uses EAT forte turntable,Meridian 208, Krell FBl amp and a pair of Sonas Faber cremona m's i have some idea about sound quality.
Monitor audio on auction site for under £40 we picked our bose up for £140 refurbished

Hi, for less £60 I built a nice ipod/mp3 player 'dock'

Lepai TA2020 T-amp and 12v PSU = £20
Mission 700(?) speakers 2nd hand = £30
Cables, capacitors and connectors for modding the Lepai = £10

It doesn't look pretty, but sounds ten times better than any 'dock' I've heard so far, I can run it from batteries also...

Steer clear of Bose, unless you have money to burn and are easily pleased...
