I haven't gotten into an MMO since they destroyed SWG, I've had a go of some of the free trials, WoW, that god awful star trek one, LOTRO and a couple of others but haven't been able to mesh with the whole theme park aspect of those games. I'm looking for something similar to SWG in its sandbox style of game play

Can you guys recommend me something?

Darkfall Online? I only tried the trial but it's great. Full loot, yay :D.

I think however it may be lacking activity wise as people are waiting for it to become 'Darkfall 2.0'.

Rift is probably the best traditional MMO around at the moment. Its a lot of fun for character builders.

If you want something different EVE or Darkfall, but they are both marmite games.

Darkfall is cool. Most sandbox type mmo there is. You can siege castles and capture them for your guild, run shops, have a house. Attack anyone anywhere and loot them dry. Some epic siege battles on youtube. Game is somewhat dated now but the gameplay is great :D.

There is EVE too (I've also played) as people have mentioned. Personally I prefer to control a character instead of a ship. Requires a crazy amount of investment time and learning curve (though it's been reduced in recent additions). It's a good game though.

Best 'not-wow wow-type' game out there would be Rift. I tried it as an alternative to wow when it was becoming stale for me. I enjoyed my time there (from a pvp pov, I avoid pve as much as possible).

SWTOR I also play (lol :D). As you mention, you are after the sandbox type. This game has to be the most 'constrained to rails' mmo I've ever played. It's fine to pass the time in but I wouldn't really say it's great. I'll stop playing when diablo 3 and gw 2 are out.

edit - never heard of Mount and Blade.

Play Eve whilst waiting for Archeage. Archeage is the game you are looking for (speaking as an ex-preCU SWG player and Archeage beta tester).

What does sandbox and theme park mean in gaming terms?

I'd assume sandbox is like how SwG was where you could do anything you wanted and it didn't centre on quests.

A theme park is like how SWtOR is where there's lots of stuff to do and they push you in the direction of what they think is best and theres not much else.

Is Darkfall like a mmo version of Mount & Blade?

Looks pretty cool.

Nah...

that would be Mortal Online your looking for.
Far more like M&B that DF ever could be

probably biased but DF Cartoon style kills it for me.
Allso handles like an Arcade hack n slash tbh

Much prefer Mortal Online Real and gritty looks
and a more simulated combat ala M&B

Allthough both games are dead recently as the comunitys are waiting on
"jesus" expansions.

lol we shall see

Very likely, but far from a sandbox mmo the OP is looking for. I'd recommend EVE!

True, but GW2 is certainly not themepark in my opinion and is very different to the likes of WOW etc. So, while it might not be explicitly sand box, it might still be a worthy shot for the OP. If he'd rather spend his time in well balanced and highly competitive PVP instead of grinding boring quests and dungeons for loot then it is probably for him.

**Note I say well balanced because in all likely hood GW2 will be very balanced down the line because they are aiming to compete with dota2 and alikes, but obviously at release it's not going to be balanced.

Thank you guys for your advice I am looking into EVE at the moment, sadly this hunk of **** computer I'm currently using can't run it but I will dive into it once my new system is built!

I've been watching this thread as i'm after a new MMO as SWTOR wasn't great - off to give the eve trail ago :)

TERA or Ragnarok Online - don't let the graphics put you off, I love the graphics although I'm in to that whole kind of thing.
