Have the following as a "home pc" but now need one for the office (word processing/software programs etc):

Home PC:

Q6600
Asus P5Q Mobo
4GB DDR2 Geil Value RAM
Radeon HD 4850 512mb

Now, i could and am willing to use this spec as an Office PC or mix and match with new bits. Budget is quite flexible but would stretch a bit to "future proof" although i dont want to overkill the office PC i would like a new "Home PC" :)

I have been looking at the Phenom bundles etc but any help appreciated in this confusing thread ;)

Regards

Lee

For an office PC you want something cheap... Athlon II X2 or E5200/E6600. PSU would be something like an Antec Earthwatts 80 Plus Green 380W or similar with 1 or 2GB of memory. The rest is pretty easy...

Asus M4A785TD-M Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) DDR3 microATX Motherboard £69.99 (£59.57)
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 240 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £46.99 (£39.99)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £40.98 (£34.88)
Corsair Value Select 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (VS2GB1333D3 G) £40.85 (£34.77)
Corsair CX 400W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-400CXUK) £38.99 (£33.18)
Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black £31.67 (£26.95)
Sony Optiarc AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99 (£14.46)

Total : £286.47

For office work the Athlon II X4 620 is very similar in speed to a Q6600:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=106&p2=53

This is what I would look at:

Athlon II X4 620 ~ £78

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-258-AM

Asus M4A785TD-V Evo ~ £73

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-355-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

This has 128MB of DDR3 for the 785G IGP and also has an 8+2 phase VRM too.

4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 RAM ~ £83

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-085-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB ~ £41

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-081-SA

This is a single platter hard disk

Corsair CX 400W ~ £39

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

This PSU is made by Seasonic

SATA DVD rewriter ~ £17

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-038-OT&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=

Coolermaster Elite 334 ~ £28

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-184-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

The total comes to around £359 excluding postage.

It you want to save some money get the following motherboard and RAM instead:

Asus M4A785D-M Pro ~ £61

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-357-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482

4GB 1066MHZ DDR2 ~ £68

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-192-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

TBH,I would actually look to get an Athlon II X3 435 as this has better single threaded performance than a X4 620 but at the same time the extra core helps in multi-threaded applications.

A comparison of the Q6600 and the X3 435:

The X3 435 is usually available for around £60 to £65.

CAT don't you think that for office work the x4 620 and the DDR3 RAM is a bit overkill?:D Those would be more suited in a gaming rig or work horse :D
