I am now a bit bored of playing my usual FPS games and want to try something different.

I haven't really played many RPGs before, but I've always been interested in them - just haven't got round to sticking to one and playing it.

There are two games that I've played that are sort of an RPG, and they are Deus Ex and Heroes of Might and Magic: Dark Messiah, which I really enjoyed.

I've been thinking of going for the online RPGs, but it all depends on whether they are worth going for over ones that are single player. I tried WoW once before and found the amount of stuff I needed to enjoy the game ridiculous and stopped playing. Maybe I should've stuck it out with WoW but I didn't want to spend more money having to buy the expansions on top of the game price and subscription.

I am not sure which RPG is for me, so this is where you guys come in. I can only say that I would prefer to play one that doesn't require you to buy tons of stuff and do a million things before you can enjoy the game. Sure having to do things is part of what an RPG is, but perhaps it needs to be a bit more 'newb' friendly for me? :o:p

thanks

Mass Effect? Took me a couple of go's to get the hang of it, but once I was I loved it. You can do as much or as little as you want.

try Fallout. it might be to your taste

sorry, totally forgot. Yeah Fallout 3 I played and got bored of. I got fed up with the time it took to get to places lol.

I've got Mass Effect, but didn't enjoy the combat in it. Guns felt a bit meh. Story was interesting but other than that I wasn't too keen on the gameplay.

Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age:Origins and Oblivion are all good RPG‘s

I was going to get Oblivion in the steam sale but missed the opportunity to get it cheap and now the price is back up. Also some people were saying it wasn't worth it, for some reason.

Dragon Age: Origins have heard about but not really looked into.

whoever told you oblivion wasnt worth it is a retard, as long as you install a few essential mods (OOO for example), its one of the best RPG's ever.

Mass effect was rubbish imo, well the first was ok, the second was just a dumbed down shooter with crappy rpg elements (IMO ofc, most people love it).

titan quest - immortal throne is very playable if you don't mind older games

If you've got a controller for your PC, I'd highly recommend The Last Remnant - the PC version is far superior to the console editions and if you get hooked on it you'll be playing it for days, if not weeks (depending on how much free time you can squeeze out of your life :p).

Two things I'd mention for this - it's not like any RPG you've mentioned, not even like any RPG recommended so far. It's a jRPG through and through, which a lot of people don't like, but you'd be a fool to pass up this gem for the sake of a few naysayers.

The second thing is that there is a lot to do - lots and lots and lots. That's common for this style of game though, and it's never felt like a grind to me. It's mostly optional stuff that you can do without, but chasing down extra characters and side-quests for cool stuff will make the game easier and a lot more fun.

Gameplay:

Highly recommended and a steal from most online distributors.

Coming from casual FPS games and as a fan of Deus Ex I'd recommend looking for a gentle introduction to 'RPG's I'd recommend:

-Deus Ex: The Invisible War
-Mass Effect 2 (ideally you'd want to play ME first, but ME2 is more newb friendly)
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Borderlands GOTY
-Bioshock

There are also some other games that are basically FPS with pseudo-RPG elements, such as Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Project Snowblind etc

Usually I hate RPG's but since I played oblivion gaming has never been the same.
Its a fantastic game 110% get it.
Next, Mass effect series are quality finishing off number 2 now but its just as good as the first.
Fallout 3 - Just play it.

The Last Remnant, a lot of people miss this game due to a missleading metascore since when it first got released bugs caused it to score lower than it should even some websites stated this and Deadbeat summed it up really.

It was £4.99 recently in Steam sale which is crazy and also Oblivion is well worth playing too as for mmorpgs do not bother with them until Diablo 3.:p

Thanks for the replies.

I think in the end I am gonna try Oblivion since that is the one that looks most interesting to me. Hopefully I will enjoy it, otherwise back to square one.
