I’ve been thinking about playing an RPG which I can jump in and out of from time to time, but not really sure which one to go with.

This need to play an RPG has originated from playing DOW II, which I totally love. It’s immersive and fantastic fun in co-op. At the moment, I’m looking for an RPG which is based on characters like the Eldar from DOW II. The magic, weapons and characters seem to have dragged me into this RPG universe which I’ve tried to stem for a long time.

I’ve been looking at Elder Scrolls Online, but I’m not really that desperate to play it at the monthly price they are asking, does look good though.

Others which have caught my interest is DOTA 2 and Marvels Universe, but I’m still not 100% sold on them.

What would you recommend?

Well I don't mind a little Guild Wars 2 myself,
no monthly fee is always a bonus too

then ( a bit far off the criteria here) I also play Star trek online from time to time.

-KOTOR 1 & 2.
-Dragon Age 1.
-Jade Empire.
-Mass Effect Trilogy.
-SWTOR (F2P enables you to complete the class stories, limited on everything else).

Well DOTA 2 is a MOBA, not an RPG, and Marvel Heroes is an isometric ARPG with loot hunting like Diablo/Titan Quest/etc.

These both differ from story driven RPGs like The Witcher or Mass Effect series (3rd person) or Oblivion/Skyrim (1st person).

hmm....would it help if I said something which looks and plays like ESO but free? Not really looking at WOW either.

I would say guild wars is the closest I know, online RPG with story elements, friendly relaxed community, PVP and PVE elements.

You don't have to keep up with the story updates if you don't want to as the fractals can allow you to look back at peices.

as for ESO I heard it was very generalized as far as RPGs go and a lot of my friends don't seem to like the look of it.

ya, I'm tempted to throw some money at ESO, but cba if I'm just gunna give it a month then not bother (but I might any way :p )

as said
baldurs gate 1/2
SWTOR
GW2
skyrim (or any elder scrolls)
fallout games?
Ultima Online ;)

think I played marvels universe briefly, was alright, like most free mmorpgs to be fair. was rather entertaining if I remember correctly :)

if ya thinking battle arenas like dota2 could try playing smite as just a pick up and play game? think myself and duky (prob a few others) are going to have a few games tonight if you want to down load it and give it a go :D

Are you bothered about it being singleplayer or multiplayer?

Fallout 1 for some classic RPG action.

Fallout 3 with some mods (same goes for New Vegas) - although prone to crashing on newer systems (typical Bethesda)

Skyrim is probably the closest you can get to Elder Scrolls Online (seeing as ESO is basically Skyrim online)

Witcher 1 and 2 are pretty great - 2 has an easier control scheme

LOTR War In the North is pretty fun, although it is a typical console port

Mass Effect trilogy - great story if you want something to get into

Two Worlds II - pretty underrated RPG, I found it pretty fun

What about Neverwinter?

I really enjoyed Mass Effect, that was a superb series. I'm really looking for an online RPG. I know you get the first month for TESO free, but not sure I'd play enough to pay the subscription. Skyrim does look good though.

oh yeah forgot about neverwinter!!

it's alright, know a few people who play (including myself) and it's pretty pick up and play really, typical mmorpg aspects with some differences, like you don't "lock" onto a target in wow, you swing and if there's things in the way... you hit :p
