Spec me an RTS

Hey guys,

I was thinking the other day about how long it's been since I really enjoyed a good rts? I think the last one I can remember really enjoying was company of heroes. Before that, probably age of empires or total annihilation - proper old school I know!

Anyway, I want to get back into a bit of base building/resource gathering etc, can anyone help me out?

Have you played any of the command and conquer series

possibly the best of the series are red aler1+2 and tiberium wars

For something a bit more up-to-date, I enjoyed Dawn of War and its expansions. DoW II I like as well, but it's a bit of a different spin on the old RTS formula, and concentrates on tactical use of units and upgrade paths instead of resource gathering and base building.

World in Conflict was a really satisfying RTS fix as well, but again the formula is tweaked away from the old style resource and base mode if that's specifically what you're looking for.

Starcraft 2. Other than that you tried the new Company of Heroes online?

I wouldn't recommend any of the recent C&C games, pretty naff tbh!

If you liked TA, Supreme Commander 1/2 would be worth a look

Starcraft 2. Start with the single player

It's by far the best RTS ever made

If you like COH then Dawn of War 2 has the same gameplay, although theyve entirely done away with the base building aspect.

Dont forget the expansion!

Starcraft. The pure balance and simplicity of it.

Starcraft 2 is ok, but there are too many troop choices for my liking.

I dont have starcraft but i hear its great fun for as long as you want it to be e.g. you start to learn the opening building strats etc (it becomes like chess lol).

I personally am a fan of Sins of a solar empire. More resource based and a lot of fun. The 3 pack can be had for £10 inc and well worth it.

I know you said you wanted base building and resource gathering, my suggestion has none of those but is exceptional.

It's in open beta atm so you won't be wasting money if you don't like it.

Thanks mate, I remember playing SC1 when it first came out round a mates; I didn't buy it at the time because you needed a super pc to really enjoy it - and I didn't

Now I think mine might be up to the job?

I've just ordered SC1 Gold from a famous river retailer for £6. That should tide me over for a while and then I might look at starcraft 2, as soon as there's a price drop...
