A work colleague wishes to upgrade from

Current specs
AMD X2 4600
Asus motherboard
2gig Crucial Ballistix

He wants to keep Antec Sonata Plus 430 case and current graphics card

One stick of memory stops system posting so he has decided to upgrade

Therefore need:
Motherboard
Processor
Memory

The rig will be for light gaming, internet and office work

Thanks

Best bet is to go AMD, and here is good spec within budget

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £65.99 (£57.38)
Asus M4A78 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £59.98 (£52.16)
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel (KHX8500D2K2/4G) £39.99 (£34.77)
Sub Total : £144.31
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £23.07
Total : £176.88

Alternatively if he's one of those people who blindly prefers intel, here is intel spec

Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3 Intel P43 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £67.99 (£59.12)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £51.99 (£45.21)
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel (KHX8500D2K2/4G) £39.99 (£34.77)
Sub Total : £139.10
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £22.29
Total : £170.89

The AMD spec is both better and offers better future upgradability via the AM3 socket

Going the AMD route:

Asus M4A78 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard link £60

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz link £105

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 link £40

Just under £205

EDIT: Beaten to it - and 95thriffles spec comes in under budget. You should be entitled to free p&p though.

i'd go with this tbh only slightly over budget and has the tri core black edition processor.

+1, seeing some of the overclocks them tri core are getting makes me wish i had gone that route and only just about £15 over budget with shipping but well worth the extra

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to give my colleague this spec with the option to spend a bit more if he wants 4Gig of memory.
