Hi, so basically my computer sucks and I want an upgrade asap.

I currently have an old desktop and a Samsung N130 netbook, neither are very powerful, the desktop has:

Amd 64 3000+
1GB DDR Ram
Ati x800xl

It's got a 400W PSU which I don't think will need upgrading, but I'm not sure.

If I spend £250, what's the best upgrade can I get?
I don't think I'll be overclocking and would prefer 4 cores.

I think I'll keep the graphics card for the moment as I won't be gaming for a while and by then I'll buy a new graphics card.

I'll probably order this in a week or 2, is anything coming out soon which will make prices drop?

Thanks!

Nope, nothing coming out in your price range this year AFAIK.

As for the 400W PSU, if its a cheapo no name, check its name against the brands in the OCUK shop, if its none of those, get this.

or if you can just stretch another £15 or so get the sapphire 625w psu
so with the phenom ii x4 it should come to around £280?

Agree. That 400w Pax Power will be fine. The Akasa's are decent units. I have the 460w version and I have had it running insane numbers of drives and fans and a heavily oc'd C2D and its rock solid. I wouldn't drive more than say a 5670 gpu with that 400 of yours if I were you but apart from that you'll be fine.

Cheers,
vfm

Thanks everyone so far :)

Will the Ati x800xl fit into that gigabyte motherboard?

I don't know anything about hardware anymore :(

do you know if its AGP or PCI-E interface?

what is the make and model of your existing motherboard? it will be printed on it somewhere, maybe between the expansion slots or near the memory slots.

Was going to ask that too, stulid. Then it occurred to me that the OP says he's is not planning to game until he gets a new gcard anyway. Outside of gaming the HD4200 IGP is going to be far better in every respect.

But as his 800 is PCI-E it will fit if the OP wants to.

Ok I'll use the onboard graphics card, cheers :)

System needs replacing, completely. £250 won't cut it.

Don't spend money trying to upgrade, it's a waste.

Well most of it will be replaced, all I'll be keeping is the case, psu, hard drives, fans and dvd drive to save money.
