Figured I would just start a separate thread so as not to hijack the MSI 670 pre-order discussion.

I currently have an MSI GTX570 (1280MB), which works pretty well for most things, though I have gone back to playing at 1440p rather than 1080p, as I've sold off my second screen.

SO! I tend to play games like Skyrim, BF3, Metro etc... and they do run pretty well, but wouldn't mind something with a little more power.

Also I should add that with a recent case change from a 600T to a Prodigy, taking advantage of a card with better cooling is desired as well. I have the standard panel on the side rather than a windowed one.

I'm looking at spending around £200, but could push a little further. Initially I was considering the KFA 760, but with the offer on the MSI 670 floating around I figure it best to get a recommendation.

One more thing as well, I seem to be seeing versions of the 7970 being sold on the MM for around this price as well. Would I be better off looking for a second hand one of those instead?

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Cheers :)

Dave.

Things are tricky around this price a lot of choice..

I would get the 670 over the 760 as it does perform better (5-10%). The OCUK deal is amazing as even secondhand ones arent going for much less..

Though if you can get a 7970 for £200 that'd be your best bet IMO. :)

Tell me about it! There are so many, and the bench sites don't necessarily account for all of the different versions of the same card, and use older drivers etc....

I had wondered if the 7970 would be the better choice, but if that wasn't an option the 670 is the one to go for whilst currently at this price point over anything else, not just the 760?

Oh I feel that too. So that I could shrink my PC down to something Prodigy sized I sold my Nexus 7 as well as having my 600T and previous motherboard on here too, which should break me even once it's all been purchased.

Case is still available by the way ;)

I have been tempted though im saving for a (quite an expensive) holiday which isn't too far away..

and i know i'd just end up buying the Prodigy M when it comes out anyway.. :)

Your case is an absolute bargain though. :)

So as the search goes on, the GTX 670 4GB version pops up for £240 and looks loooooverly..but there is also a SAPPHIRE HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB GDDR5 VAPOR-X on the MM right now.

Anyone have any thoughts on which would be more preferable?

Thoughts appreciated!

Oh really, thanks for the heads up. I assume that's just a possibility rather than a certainty though right?
The KFA2 that's on sale? I did some research and a detailed review said KFA have a problem with constant coil whine so I checked some YT videos and the KFA2/Galaxy cards did have coil whine including the 4GB ram version, I asked a guy from the USA on YT, he said his friends can hear the whine but his case has fans so it drowns out the noise.

Yeah that's the one I'm looking at. The fans in my current rig are so quiet as well that there's nothing to drown out the noise, so I guess that's out then!

Thanks for the heads up.

I suppose there is always the possibility that I might not hear the coil whine. If that's the case then I'd be happy with it. Also the 7970 is the one on the MM and so wouldn't have any kind of cooling off period, I would just have to sell it on again, and likely drop the price because of hearing it.

On top of this I've read up on the bottleneck VRAM issue that can arise as well, and I think that I should be fine. Most games don't use 2GB anyway, but I'm currently enjoying a modded out Skyrim, and playing at 1440p that extra memory will come in handy for the high res textures.

Definitely feeling like the more I look into this the more confused I get!
