He has:

case (lancool dragonlord or something), and 500w PSU, plus monitor kb etc.

needs cpu, ram, and mobo, and HDD plus gpu under £500, preferably less. MM is an option, so 2nd is fine

Would be good to find out exactly what one it is, its age and if it has all the connectors needed for something like,

Is this for gaming?

just checked, modxstream pro 500w SLI certified, bought end of 2011 but not used very much and certainly nowhere near a heavy load.

It is for gaming, yeah. I was thinking a 290 2nd hand (they seem to be going for next to nothing/£150 these days).

He's using my old E8400 and a 5870 so anything will be a big jump, devils canyon seems too good for him! Can't have him running a better chip than me! Worth considering a 2nd hand 2500K or are they starting to show their age now?

I would not want to run a 290 from that PSU plus some 290s use 2x8pin connectors, if you need to use an adapter for that then its doing it wrong.

A 2500K is still a quick CPU, the Haswell/devils canyon are not too far ahead and with the right Z68/77 board 4.0-4.5Ghz is easy (with a fat cooler).

yeah, might be pushing it. 970 would be okay, but not cheap now everyone has calmed down about the vram thng. I suppose if he can stretch to £500 that's a very solid build, with a bit of room for growth too. Nice to have warranty as well. I think he'll need a cpu cooler too. No extreme overclocks to be done, but something for 4gHz on the cheap would be ideal. I'm a bit out of touch with coolers these days. any recommendations?

I've ran my 2500k at 4.5ghz in loads of different tiny cases with low profile coolers of varying degrees, you really don't need anything too exotic to keep temps on the cool side of moderate.

If it's a standard size tower case then I think the Cooler Master Hyper 212 is a good shout for £25, or maybe a Be Quiet! Pure Rock for a couple of quid more.

Okay thanks chaps. 280x it is then. Still 3 times faster than his 5870. Was looking at the Rajintek coolers as I remember them doing well in reviews but still cheap. Worth a punt?
