Hi guys.

The last time I upgraded was about 2/3 years ago. I currently have:

X2 6000+
4GB RAM
A budget motherboard
8800GT
500w PSU

Now i'm looking to change the CPU for a quad which will force me to buy a new motherboard and I also want a new GPU.

My budget is £250.

I bought the 8800GT for £120 from OcUK and it's done me very well so I want to buy today's equivalent for the same price.

Thanks :)

If you can stretch budget a little this would be nice

OcUK Value GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £143.98 (£122.54)
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 555 3.20GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail £76.99 (£65.52)
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £63.99 (£54.46)
Sub Total : £284.96

If not your best bet is prob to get an old series card, DX10, eg 4870/4890 which should bring you in under budget

Depends what you're using the PC for really, personally for any gamers/heavy PC users I wouldn't suggest the Phenom II X2 chips unless they really want to play the unlocking gambling game.

What speed is your RAM? You'll want to check if it's actually fast enough for modern AM2+ boards.

My PC is used for photo editing (Photoshop) and gaming.

Got BFBC2 which runs like crap and I'm wanting to play Mafia II and F1 2010 at pretty high detail.

My ram 'should' be ok as it was only bought last year from OcUK.

yeah a quad core would be better but to stay in budget youd have to drop to an athlon, for gaming the phenom dual core is still gonna be better in over 95% of games

If you don't mind buying from the members market you could get a lot better value for money...

Phenom 955 ~£80
AM2+ motherboard £40-50

Not many people selling used GTX 460s yet but you could probably pick up a HD 5850 for around £150 if you wanted to give ATI a try.
