My rig is now around two years old and this is it:
AMD: 3500
1GB Geil Ram Pc3200
Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo
200GB HDD Sata
Geforce 6800Gt 256 MB Ram
Neopower 480W
Soundblaster Augidy Zs

That's pretty much the mainpart of my rig, but I do want to upgrade a few parts; CPU, Ram and GPU.

However, I don't want to change mobo and don't want to change the power unit.

So I was thinking of the latest ATi GPu that's out at end of November, but also a new CPU - AMD x2 Dual Core 4600 and getting 2x1GB's of Geil Value Ram PC3200.

Oh, am not interested in overclocking, so would I be able to do all of that without changing the power unit? 480 W enough? And would that be a decent rig? I know it's no conroe beast, but I don't want a new rig till DX10 is firmly established.

I would probably agree with your thoughts, best to go for,

GeCube ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail - £187.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939) - Retail - £164.49

G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 (2x1GB) CAS2 Dual Channel Kit - £187.99

TOTAL --- £540.47

That price isn't too bad when you consider you may get ~£100 for your old bits. Looking at around £400 to upgrade.

I changed the RAM as this has much better timings for roughly £20 more. :)

But that should extend your system until DX10 is established, and possibly even pick up a quad-core CPU as well. :)

u **** wait until DX10 then as an am2 will only give u a few percentage performance increase...

otherwise get a cheap conroe ...

to be honest if i were u id save the cash

for the amount you spending you could get a decent conroe rig easily....

Where did you get AM2 from?

£400 to upgrade his system to last until perhaps next year is good money. The 2Gb of RAM and the ATi card will make his system much better for gaming. The dual-core will speed up windows, and certain game titles.

And that money would not get a decent conroe rig.

You'd need to spend (just looking quickly):-

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail - £230.29

Asus P5W64-WS Pro Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £187.99

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit - £205.61

... and a PCI-E graphics card...

OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £180.94

TOTAL --- £804.83

Firegod. Bit of an unfair comparison as this system will give your rig a run for its money and overclocked will knock the socks off it. ;)

MB-061-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
£91.99 £91.99
MY-092-CS Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-092-CS)
£149.99 £149.99
CP-126-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)
£114.99 £114.99
GX-002-GC GeCube ATI Radeon X1950 Pro FZ SuperCooled TURBO SILENT TEC/Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-002-GC)
£144.99 £144.99
Subtotal £501.96
VAT £87.85
Total £589.81

... but he doesn't want to overclock it mate. ;) Hence why I have had to use the higher clocked std. parts for the system.

First off you'll have to change the mobo because it doesn't support PCI-Express! Second the A8V Deluxe was revision one (I'm sure) & couldn't overclock because of lack of AGP/PCI lock! Other problem I had was, with a 9800PRO I had to run it at 4x instead of 8  Good stable mobo though.

I'd look at the Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 :)
